COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Superior Hoppy Belgian Ale. White very rich foam, small bubbles. Very hoppy, spicy, fruity flavour and full, heart warming body. Brewed at first at Van Steenberge, now brewed at Koningshoeven - La Trappe brewery.

Some reported their pour as clear but mine was completely clouded with huge chunks of yeast floating throughout the slightly tarnished penny-colored beverage. Persistent head of an off-white foam; lasting lacing. Aroma was fruity with peach, raisin, sweet caramelly malt, some spicy hop notes. Taste was similar and with the spicy hops, hinted at a saison (just a hint). Huge creamy mouthfeel, enough small-bubble carbonation to present the flavors nicely, and some alcohol warmth. I disagree with the brewer’s "very hoppy" descriptor but perhaps that’s just the European viewpoint since Americans slam hops into anything. Given the brewer’s intent, this is a decent brew.

750mL. The pour is a crystal clear orange gold with a giant, yellowish off-white head. Great to near awesome retention and magnificent lace. Nose is saison like with hints of sweet orange, celery, sweet nectar, flowers. Enormous lace. The taste at first is kettle corn, a little more raw grainy than expected with oatmeal and grist character, a little bit of vodka like warming alcohol. Not really hoppy or bitter in profile. I was expecting something a bit similar to Gouden Carolus Hopsinjoor or La Chouffe IPA Tripel. But this is very different. Lacks complexity and certainly lacks a grassy bitterness. Yeast is not as nearly pronounced. Good, but disappointing.

Hazy and yellow with good carbonation and a very foamy head. Aroma of fruit and yeast. The taste is dark spice with a hoppy bitterness. Definitely reminds me of other beers from this brewery.

0,75-Literflasche. Test vom 13.7.2009, Gebinde: Glasflasche

Bottle from Cavie. Light pour with a white head. Aroma is yeasty and spicy. Taste is bitter, a little floral, a little citrus, and dry yeast.

Bottle via trade. Pours a murky golden yellow color with a foamy white head. Aroma is dry malts and sweet notes, with Belgian yeast notes. Flavor is dry and sweet with sugary notes and more Belgian yeast. Finishes a bit strong.

(bottle 8/30/10). Clear straw yellow color. Large off white head. Sweet malt aroma with light fruitiness. Strong sweet malt flavor, with light hops. Long duration. Moderate alcohol finish. Slick texture. Moderate carbonation. Fair lacing.

Bottle. Orange with a thick, creamy, durable head. Aroma is grainy malt with a strong fruitiness (orange and peach) and strong piney-herbal hops, slightly touched by camomille and devoid of alcohol, despite the 9,5% ABV. The aroma is nothing short of genius, very fruity and hoppy, unfortunately the taste, while very good, does not manage to hold up the first impression. The taste is surprisingly light and well balanced with its combination of fruitiness and hoppiness but the finish is a bit heavier, dominated by a hoppy-alcoholic aroma and bitterness that is quite high for a Belgian ale but low for an IPA. I get the impression that it would be better with the alcohol in the finish being less pronounced. Either way it is very good.
