Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Brewed under direction of Hildegard van Ostaden, formerly at Van Steenberge, now at Koningshoeven - La Trappe brewery.
With its rich foam, hoppy flavour and fine bitterness, Urthel Vlaemse Bock is a special ale with a high drinkability for lovers of the authentic Flemish brewing art. Vlaemse Bock as originally brewed for the winter, but is now available in 33 cl. (330 ml./ 11.2 FL.OZ.), 75 cl. (750 ml./1 PT. 9.4 FL. OZ.) and kegs the whole year. You can only buy Urthel Vlaemse Bock in the United States. This heart-warming dubbel of 7.5% of alcohol, traditionally top fermented and bottle conditioned flamey dark ale has a tastefully rich, malty, slightly sweet flavour. Vlaemse Bock’s very fine distinctive bitterness makes you forget the long cold winter.

Bottle (330ml). Deep refractive chestnut red with a large frothy beige lating head, thick lacing drapes. Rich dark sweet malt aroma, molasses, raisins, figs, light chocolate, dry yeast, winter spices, alcohol. The flavour follows right on, quite warming, sweet, spicy and dark, even some tart cherry inj there too. Average body, very slick and lively, spicy yeast and alcohol bitterness balances out the sweet malt nicely, medium long linger but no aftertaste. Got a nice little buzz off it.

330ml bottle. Hazy murky brown with ruby highlights. Dissipating finger width of beige head. Sweet cinnamon nose. Candy sugar. Full bodied and sweet, with a nice sporatic citrus bitterness slashing through the middle. Caramel malts and quite bright. Clinging head and notes of dates and cloves. Spicy splashes. Sweet syrupy to 7Up to tart red fruit and sweet breads. Not the fullest double I’ve ever had, but that doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of this brew at all. Nice balance. Not quite rounded, but definitely melded flavors. I really love randomly rating beers after vyvvy (see below). Typical striking contrasts! Cheers John!

Pours dark tawny brown with a nice pillowy light tan head. The aroma has dark grain, yeast, breadiness, brown sugar and toasted malt. Medium / full body that starts soft then gets thinner and a bit abrasive with fairly harsh sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with dark bread and molasses, roasted malt and cola-like flavor. Then some maple syrup followed by medicinal astringency. The last lingering part has brown sugar and a citrusy sharpness. Overall it is an odd beer that I’m not sure if I like or not.

Bottle. Fairly weak aroma of toffee, oak and yeast. Pours a rich cloudy brown with a huge off-white head. Roasted malt, dry white oak, and an odd sourness on the palate. Medium to full bodied with decent carbonation.

Probably the best single-bock I’ve had. The appearance is one of deep ruby with an aggressive head that does its Arrogant Bastard receptacle -- a very modestly priced receptacle in which to transmit this beverage’s final mortal remains -- proud. This beer actually hits the spot in a way few beers do, without having to be all complex and sophisticated and stuff. I’d drink this shit till the cows come home. The only weak spot is the lack of aroma. Gotta pump up some subjective areas to compensate, ’cause aroma is only so important.. Good night, sweet prince.

Bottle: Poured a dark brown with reddish hint, the head is a foamy beige color. The aroma is sweet hoppy fruit. Taste is a hoppy roasted malt with suttle taffee black currant finish.

7/12/2007: Urthel Vlaemse Bock smells wonderful. The aroma contans lots of sweet almond, rich malt, and even a little reminiscent of sweet honey mead. This beer is clear, dark brown in color with a dense, creamy tan head that leaves nice lacing effects. The flavor is strong, sweet, malty, and rich with some almond and alcohol. This beer has a medium-full body and is quite smooth. This is a really good Abbey Dubbel/Bock beer with charactistics of both styles coming through in the overall presentation.

11.2 fl. oz. bottle (Alc. 7.5% by Vol. / D8CF 13:28) from Tmoney99. Thank you Tom. I appreciate it! Rating #145 for this beer...
