Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Brewed under direction of Hildegard van Ostaden, formerly at Van Steenberge, now at Koningshoeven - La Trappe brewery.
With its rich foam, hoppy flavour and fine bitterness, Urthel Vlaemse Bock is a special ale with a high drinkability for lovers of the authentic Flemish brewing art. Vlaemse Bock as originally brewed for the winter, but is now available in 33 cl. (330 ml./ 11.2 FL.OZ.), 75 cl. (750 ml./1 PT. 9.4 FL. OZ.) and kegs the whole year. You can only buy Urthel Vlaemse Bock in the United States. This heart-warming dubbel of 7.5% of alcohol, traditionally top fermented and bottle conditioned flamey dark ale has a tastefully rich, malty, slightly sweet flavour. Vlaemse Bock’s very fine distinctive bitterness makes you forget the long cold winter.

750 ml bottle shared with rebelbeerguy. Poured dark brown with a slight hint of orange and a large off white head. Aroma was nice with dark fruit, raisins, and sugar being present. Flavor didn’t live up to the aroma and although similar it just wasn’t strong enough. Slight alcohol warming on the very back of my throat. Pretty good beer but for the money there are many better options.

Clean caramel aroma, with a little brown sugar, and a metalic smell. Pours dark brown with a nice tan head. Rich roasted flavor with caramel malts, and molasses, clean yet roasted finish. An interesting change for a Dubbel. Not bad.

pours a very dark cloudy brown with a large light tan colored head. sweet caramel, nuts, grapes, and yeast in aroma. flavor has notes of caramel, nuts, and grapes. palate is very carbonated and medium-light bodied and keeping it from being great. somewhat bitter for a dubbel.

Poured a dark ruby red almost brown with a white head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, fruit, and alcohol. Taste was much of the same. Very sweet.

On tap at Monks Cafe...Dark brown body...brown frothy head...aroma is almost cab-like...caramel malt flavor..brown sugar...creamy with a slight hop bitterness, faint and blended just so ,"i like that!"...a bit of baking cocoa finish leaves you wanting more...alcohol is well disguised as well

Draft, at Monk’s Cafe. Pours a ruby/chestnyt color with a thick tan head. sweet malty aroma, with some fruity, almost vinous character. Complex flavor with sweet malt, cocoa, fruit, and alcohol. Really nice.

Bottle. The description on the label as a "flamy dark ale" is definitely accurate. Rich, smoky dark malt flavors back up the dark and crimson pour. Very interesting, very tasty, and not at all like other Abbey dubbels I have tasted. I will definitely try others from Urthel based on this one.
