Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Brewed under direction of Hildegard van Ostaden, formerly at Van Steenberge, now at Koningshoeven - La Trappe brewery.
With its rich foam, hoppy flavour and fine bitterness, Urthel Vlaemse Bock is a special ale with a high drinkability for lovers of the authentic Flemish brewing art. Vlaemse Bock as originally brewed for the winter, but is now available in 33 cl. (330 ml./ 11.2 FL.OZ.), 75 cl. (750 ml./1 PT. 9.4 FL. OZ.) and kegs the whole year. You can only buy Urthel Vlaemse Bock in the United States. This heart-warming dubbel of 7.5% of alcohol, traditionally top fermented and bottle conditioned flamey dark ale has a tastefully rich, malty, slightly sweet flavour. Vlaemse Bock’s very fine distinctive bitterness makes you forget the long cold winter.

750ml. Demonic red pour with near purple hues interwoven, frothy, soap bubble looking head of quite the persistent nature. Aroma is of sweet candied apples and other darker fruits, caramel malt, molasses, clove, raisins and soured milk. Flavor is very sweet, almost too much so, but rounds off with a tinge of drying alcohol in the end, hops are without a notable presence, this a complimentary aspect to a unique tasting beer. Lacks the spicy pepper taste I associate with so many European bock beers, not so much a fan of that aspect. Overall, full of vibrant character, but missing something in the finish, I think just not dry enough in the end, or maybe a little too thin.

(Bottled) Dark ruby red with a largeish, foamy and lacy head. Neutral, slightly yeasty, dried-fruity and malty aroma. Slightly sweet, quite malty, dried-fruity flavor with a salty licorice finish. Medium-bodied, neutral and very slightly thin palate with smooth carbonation. Very balanced and enjoyable. Feels more like a dubbel than a bock. If this really is bottom-fermented ... nice!

Frothy and very persistent dense beige head on a deep violet-amber body. Aroma of molasses, caramel, and sweet potato. Sweet molasses and soy meat marinade flavor with some tangy figs and dried plums. Sticky palate and medium body. Somewhat underattenuated with notable complex carbs. Good overall.

Mahogany color. Pretty straight beer, malt a lot of caramel, quite dry, meat flavor, nothing special.

750ml bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a large lasting amber head. Aromas of plums, raisins, brown sugar and spice. Palate was light bodied. Flavors of brown sugar, spice and hints of grape and plum with a sweet finish.

This is a solid beer but I wasn’t crazy about it. It wasn’t quite German or Belgian in character, and seemed stuck in the middle. There is some caramel in the flavor, but very little aroma at all. Surprisingly a little bit of sourness as well as oak.

Cellar’s Tasting. Dark brown color with a thin head. Definitely a bockish aroma of strong malt, but there’s a breadiness there that I would associate with Belgians. The taste prooves it right. While the strong, sweet malt is there like in most bocks, the yeast plays the Belgian fiddle for sure. The fruit and doughyness are dead give aways. Interestingly enough, it seems stronger than a Dubbel, but not quite a Quad. Kind of like a Triple that’s not golden and all hopped up. Very nice.

Bottle at home. Very spicy Bock. Scent is deep alcohol and dark fruit. Full-bodied, prickly with mild finish.
