Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
Brewed under direction of Hildegard van Ostaden, formerly at Van Steenberge, now at Koningshoeven - La Trappe brewery.
With its rich foam, hoppy flavour and fine bitterness, Urthel Vlaemse Bock is a special ale with a high drinkability for lovers of the authentic Flemish brewing art. Vlaemse Bock as originally brewed for the winter, but is now available in 33 cl. (330 ml./ 11.2 FL.OZ.), 75 cl. (750 ml./1 PT. 9.4 FL. OZ.) and kegs the whole year. You can only buy Urthel Vlaemse Bock in the United States. This heart-warming dubbel of 7.5% of alcohol, traditionally top fermented and bottle conditioned flamey dark ale has a tastefully rich, malty, slightly sweet flavour. Vlaemse Bock's very fine distinctive bitterness makes you forget the long cold winter.

Bottle at The Penguin off Octo’s shelf. Deep cherry red with a tight beige foam. Sweet toffeeish bock snout dragging in rye bread, booze, marzipan, malf loaf, liquorice and old leaves. Sweet but balanced with oily hop, rich walnutty malt, a dollop of varnish and faint dankness. Figgy fruit and cola spiciness. Plenty of alcohol glow as it slips down; hints of red apple and cherry fruit, chocolate, blood and cake. Robust warming doppelbock more German than Belgian in influence I’d say. Very decent.

Location: 11.2 oz bottle from Gilly’s, 3/31/09

Aroma: Malty spices, roasted, caramel
Appearance: Thick brownish head, cloudy brown colored beer
Flavor: Sweet, rich malty flavor, just a little bitterness mid-palate
Palate: Nice well blended palate, good mouthfeel
Overall Impression: A nice beer, drinks well, smooth, sweetness with just a little bitter tang to it, a nice cold weather ale.

Dark brown opaque pour with a huge rocky tan head and thick creamy lacing. Aroma of caramel and fruits. Rich malty taste with subtle notes of plum and grape. Slight tangy bitterness as well that lingers to form the finish.

11.2oz bottle. Poured medium ambery-brown with a creamy cap of beige head. The aroma picked up candied caramel, nutty notes, and raisins with a very distinct yeast impression.. vanilla and earthy spices on the back. The flavor was very much in the sweet department with aged caramel and raisins providing the most character.. bitterness was light and earthy, while the yeasty notes were brighter and spicy.. finished warm, spicy, and a little sour. Medium-ish bodied with lively carbonation on the palate.. balance was OK, but it was too strong and a bit abrasive at the finish. Decent stuff.
