3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 lusikka (2062) - Tampere, FINLAND - DEC 18, 2010
330 ml bottle. BBE 03-2013.
Pours a dark amber colour with a large, frothy, lacy head. Aroma of dark fruits, syrup and malts. Flavour of strong dark fruits like raisin, good malty body and floral hops with some hay. Full bodied with a round mouthfeel and loads of alcohol. Alcohol comes through way too much. Would be interesting to see this a bit more mature.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 mile (1222) - Helsinki, FINLAND - DEC 16, 2010
Bottle. Dark brown, average and mostly lasting light brown head. Moderate, malty and sweet, fruity with light spiciness and alcohol. Body is medium to full, malty and sweet flavor, some alcohol and light spiciness. Finish is average, malty ad sweetish – alcohol dries up the sweetness. Too much alcohol and sweetness for my taste –lacks totally the hoppyness (due to sweetness?), quite one dimensional.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 WillemG (88) - NETHERLANDS - DEC 11, 2010
10-dec-2010
33cl bottle at home. Amber beer with average beige head. I had this one next to Gulden Draak, and the Urthel was as sweet, only a little less fresh and balanced. You wouldn’t say this is 11.5% ABV though, pretty good beer.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 wingman333 (333) - San Antonio, Texas, USA - DEC 10, 2010
One of the first Belgians I ever had - 4 years ago. Still as good as remembered. Big coffee with cream flavors, along with cherry tones and vanilla. Astringent alcohol on finish, maybe a bit too much actually. Bitterness in taste and sweetness in aroma. Chewy mouthfeel.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 DuffMan (4242) - the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, CANADA - DEC 8, 2010
Bottle. Slightly hazy medium amber, short-lived golden head, no lace. Boozy aroma, sweet like rye or dark rum, lightly spicy. Flavour is very boozy as well, with sweet rummy toffee, cooked peaches, and a subtle licorice not in the finish. Lots of alcohol heat in the swallow. Too boozy and sweet for me. Possibly could do well with age, but I don’t see much future in such a basic young structure.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 mansquito (1607) - washington, Washington DC, USA - DEC 4, 2010
New Beer Distributors 11.2oz ($3.50): Pours a reddish brown body with a quickly dissipating head that keeps some lacing forever. Aroma is of booze. Straight up. But it is most reminiscent of some kinds of run or perhaps brandy. Obviously, there is some fruitiness and spiciness in there, but if you were to let me whiff this I would say blindly that it is not a beer. Taste of boozy sweetness, making it difficult to drink and in fact does a good job of covering most of the other tastes such as the spices and fruit flavors. A bunch of malts and barely any hops to be had. Sure, it is a pretty unique taste, but considering it is only 11% alcohol and is this boozy turns me off (for example, De Dolle Stille Nacht is 12% and is much better balanced than this). Basically, I didn’t really like it.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 rand (740) - SWITZERLAND - DEC 2, 2010
Bottle 33 cl from Amstein in St-Légier (CH). Beer 11,5 ABV, warm vermilion and beige orangy foam evanescent. Powerful aromas of malt, alcohol, spices and toffy. The taste is sweet, solid, syrupy malt, molasses, Xeres and fruity of plum, date, raisin and almond. A beer, warm and complex of alcohol, and weaved by threads of silky and herbaceous bitterness.
