COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Urthel Samaranth 12 Quadrium Ale is a malty, full-bodied special Ale, brewed in a way that only Belgian Brewers can. Huge mouthfeel and layers and levels of flavor make Urthel Samaranth the perfect beer for the end of a meal or at the finish of a special day. And when you want something different, Urthel Samaranth 12 Quadrium Ale is with its fine bitterness, definitely something different... Try it! First brewed at Van Steenberge, now brewed at Koningshoeven - La Trappe brewery.

Pours a clear amber/brown with a one inch light off-white head and good carbonation leaving a decent lacing. The nose is great, dominated by caramel malt but with deep fruit, toffee sweetness and a hint of chocolate. Bready, caramel malt is overbearing in the mouth... There are hints of deep fruit, and an underlying sweetness that really comes through on the swallow along with a nice zing from the 11.5%, but it’s all overpowered by the over the top malt character. This has a nice, smooth mouthfeel with just the right amount of carbonation, but the taste isn’t well balanced at all. Not sure if i’ll be able to finish this one...

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2010 01/11/2010: 33cl bottle. Pours a cloudy dark brown/red (clears near the end of the glass) with a medium beige head. Aroma and taste is caramel malts and spices on top of a nice alcohol base. Good depth, decent balance. Overall very good. 08/14/2010: 750ml bottle - cork date: 07/08. Not changing my original score, just notes. Taste: Carmel malts, notes of dark fruit & spices, booze much more smooth (soft edges). Some alcohol warmth & burn in the finish. A big punch in this beer - not what I would call nuanced or complex, but solid and very well done.

Bottle. Pours a brune body with a tan head. Vinous etoh latent fruit, caramel malt tones, dark esters cherry, plum with some light citrus notes. A candy sweetness some dry wet wood tones and a strong warming. A great night cap, but nothing phenomenal in terms of quads.

Pours a huge beige head that diminishes completely. The aroma is full of sugar/fruit. The appearance is a cloudy dark golden brown with little chunks oif yeast floating in it. The flavor is full of malt at first, but overpowered by the alcohol. I would describe the flavor as being malt + alcohol + hops.

Pours a lovely cloudy brown color with lots of thick beige head. Aroma is of malt, grains, raisins, perhaps some nutty flavor. Very nice full bodied mouth feel. Overall a very rich and well balanced beer which is a nice blend between a typical Belgian quad, yet with sour taste which is from the Flemish influences.

Dark, thick, rich flavor, accompanied by a high alcohol content (11% ABV). While noticable, the alcohol taste is well balanced with the other flavors, which are equal strong and quite numerous. The sweet, syrupy texture & taste is a bit more pronounced than I’d like. This is a meal - or two - in a bottle. A great beer that I think would be better if less syrupy and sweet.
