Frisian dubbel, one of the instigators of the revival of Dutch beer culture back in the eighties so in my opinion, an underestimated classic. Purplish, dark red wine colour, clear with good, finely structured fizz; medium thick, milky, modestly lacing head consisting of minuscule bubbles. Aroma of caramel candy, cookie dough, iron, candied cherries, raisins, tea, biscuit, liquorice, cardboard, brown sugar, ’speculoos’, a weak impression of pipe tobacco, a fortunately very faint sulphuric hint of menure (!) and some vague DMS (red cabbage). Sweet onset, candi sugar, raisins, candied figs, overripe pear, with a dull kind of restrained sourishness; smooth, somewhat oily mouthfeel with soft carbonation; middle phase brings a solid, slick caramelly and nutty maltiness with chocolatey hints but slightly metallic as well; finishes in more caramelly malt sweetness along with leafy hop bitterness achieving just enough balance, and a touch of warming, bourbon-like alcohol. Smooth, sweet and warming, not too complex but very enjoyable on a winter’s day. Reminds me of a top-fermented Dutch Bock. Not bad, but the iron is just a bit too explicit.

300 ml bottle at home, poured into a tulip glass, bought as part of a 4pack of different Us Heit beers. ABV 6% Clear body, with a deep amber caramerl brown colour. On top of it one finger of off-white head, low retention and no lacing left on the glass. Aroma of caramel, lighty roasted malts and milky chocolate. Taste follows the aroma, only now the roasted malts are more notable, the chocolate notes too. Quite sweet, with only hints of bitterness. Very tasty though. Medium thickness on the body, soft carbonation. Mildly dry palate. This is onkly the second from the 4pack but something is telling me is going to be the best one as well. Very high drinkability, tasty, relatively low alcohol, ideal for a session beer.
