COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"English Table Beer."
Available filtered and bottled.
Contract brewed for Refresh UK. From 2000 to Summer 2004 by Burtonwood. From Summer 2004 by Wadworth.
"A distinctive ale crafted from a judicious blend of Pale, Crystal and Vienna malts to creat a Rotwein hue. Ruby Ale has a vinous, full bodied flavour and a perfectly balanced subtle bitterness. The rich aroma is characteristic of these distinctive hop varieties. Brewed from Fanfare malted barley, Fuggles and Styrian Golding hops."

Golden brown and very sweet. The sweetness takes over and makes it hard to say anything else about the beer.

Brown color with hints of red. Medium light brown head. Sweetness, chocolate, licorice, nuts and mild alcohol in aroma, aroma is fine and rich. Medium bodied. Chocolate, sweetness, mild licorice in flavor, alcohol comes up too strongly. Aftertaste lasts with alcohol and sweetness.

Bottle. I want to start this review with a reservation: The sharp sweetness that I found in this beer might be a lactose infection. I will return to this ale later and I might revise then.

The colour is brown-red; the liquid is a little bit cloudy.

The smell is roasted with some bitterness, diacetyl and nuts. Quite nice, I think.

The carbonation is a little sharp with lots of small bubbles.

The taste is very sweet (almost saccharine-like) and wine-like with a full-bodied flavour. The bitterness is rather mild. There are also notes of brown sugar and herbs. The long aftertaste is also dominated by the heavy sharp sweetness with notes of strong wine and fruit drops.

I am unconvinced of this ale, but as I said, it might be damaged.

bluevegie (3052) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - APR 15, 2005
Ruby body that was clear and had a compact almost tan coloured head that left layers of brussels lace. Aroma is some malt, caramel, a touch of spice and then a hint of oranges. Fruity sweetness is what you taste at first. Malt shows up as you taste this further then some bitter characters. Syrupy texture with a medium going on full body. Liked this beer but wouldn’t drink a lot of it. Almost like a Sauterne with only half the alcohol. Cheers!

turbothy (1086) - Bonn, GERMANY - MAY 21, 2005
Pours reddish amber with little or no head at all. Aroma is sweet and earthy, mouthfeel is a bit thin and the taste, while not very big, is pleasant and vinous.

sayravai (4674) - Helsinki, FINLAND - JUN 19, 2005
(Bottled) Dark, brownish red with a smallish, tanned head. Mild, fruity and caramely aroma. Sweetish, caramely and toffeeish flavor with pine, anise and low, lingering bitterness. Medium-bodied, sticky-syrupy and low-carbonated palate. A quite enjoyable, smooth and balanced, spicy ale, but nothing very special. Feels more like a dessert drink than a substitute for red wine.
