anthlovesbeer (61), north grafton, Massachusetts, USA Feb 3, 2008 I admire the light carbonation and smooth malty taste. Basically, if you enjoy porters, you must try this one!
nuplastikk (428), Maryland, USA Aug 26, 2008 Updated: Aug 31, 2008500ml bottle. Murky, deep, stained glass red-brown color. Nice creamy head. Aroma of brown sugar and licorice. Creamy rich taste, with a pungent chocolate finish. Lots of sweet dark malt characteristics, sort of like a strong Dunkel. The alcohol level is quite nice on this one, clearly stronger than a typical beer, but never overbearing. Pretty good example of the style. robforbes (733), Bremerton, Washington, USA Aug 25, 2008 pours a somewhat clear brown with a red tint, medium size tan head, good lacing.
smell is light cocoa, weak coffee, touch of roasted nuts.
taste is creamy, roasted nuts, bakers chocolate, coffee, malt, ends on the bitter side with some smoke. michael-pollack (1394), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 24, 2008 500ml Bottle: Faint aroma of chocolate and roasted malts. Poured dark brown/red in color with a large, dense, creamy, fizzy, beige head that lasted throughout. Clear. Sparkling. Lightly sweet flavor. Tastes of malts, chocolate, and some roasting. Light to medium body. Thin, watery texture. Soft to average carbonation. Cocoa finish. Beershine (1214), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Aug 20, 2008 Hazy brown with head that leaves before you blink. Sweet and metallic. Not a satisfying aroma. Turns into a horrid sticky mess with unidimensional alcohol dominating the body. Brigadier (887), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Aug 7, 2008 500 ml bottle
I wish I had gone for this instead of the pale ale at first. This was a much better alternative for the same price. At $1.99 my expectations were fairly low but it was a new baltic porter. After trying it this will be a safe fallback to those times when I want something that doesn’t break the bank. If there were a ’value’ score that could be assigned to beers this would be a 5 out of 5.
Aroma / Appearance - The carbonated body had a reddish brown tint with a nice looking ash head. Cherries, chocolate and other aspects of an ice cold Dr Pepper rose to the forefront as I admired the scent coming from my snifter. A hint of smoke counterbalanced the sweetness nicely.
Flavor / Palate - The fluid mouthfeel contained blackberries, smoke and charcoal. A chalky aftertaste left the throat satisfied yet wanting more. Fading quickly it did not take long to finish off the bottle. This is on par with most of the other baltic porters that I’ve tried and better than most in this price range.
