3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 drjay44 (1615) - Salida, Colorado, USA - NOV 11, 2011
750 ml. bottle. Pours a thick, lasting, ivory head, with extensive lacing, over a clear reddish copper, brown (SRM 18) body...nose is heavy with sweet malts, (dried fruits, including cherry raisin, fig), brown sugar....taste is dried cherry, raisin, fig, brown sugar, plum, hints of cocoa, finishing with a light sweet bitterness....mouth feel thick, sticky, alcohol lightly present, carbonation low. This is obviously a Dark Belgian Strong Ale. It is at the nexus of mince pie, plum pudding, and Tawney Port. It is very vinous, sweet and complex. The sweetness is heavy, which may be a function of youth, but I cannot tell the bottles age. I did mark it down because of the domination by the sugar flavors. BJCP 8/3/13/4/7
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 pushkinwow (739) - Ontario, CANADA - NOV 5, 2011
750ml bottle, Sept 2009. Dark brown with dark biege head. Yeast, booze, dark fruit, strong spice and malt presence for a belgian. Full bodied, boozy, average carbonation, fruity, slightly sweet, bit of a dry finish. Fairly strong flavours, decently balanced, probably could have done with another year to mellow a bit but still good.

Aroma of sweet molasses and apple, candy sugar, chocolate and raisins. Appearance is deep, cola brown with light bone head. Flavor matches the nose; quite sweet, but not cloying- a little toasty chocolate in the finish. Palate is bubbly. Good, but not a top quality BSA for me.

UPDATED: NOV 26, 2011 Bottle/750ml - 02/09 vintage (according to the cork) - Pours a very dark reddish brown in color with a medium foamy off-white head that hung around to produce some very nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is sweet with plenty of estery light fruits (apple, cherry), some of the dark fruits (raisin, prune) and lots of the Belgian yeast. Flavor is fairly strong of cherries and dark fruits... also quite sweet. Some slight dark malt and definitely some chocolate in the finish, which is lingering, very fruity and quite sweet. Really good... the age plays well... just a bit sweet for me...
