4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Scrapersnbeer (977) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - MAY 13, 2013
I just exited from Canada and cracked this big 750 to celebrate the exit of 3 of the four qualifying Canadian teams from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Too soon?...Too bad. This is an estery smelling beer with currants dates and spices all trying to cover a heavy dose of alcohol. Brown color like peering into a dark cold snowy night through a car window. Big lacy head. It’s very sweet with some sour elements. It has a spicy zing and the dark fruits mesh well with the strength of the beer. Nice carbonation, truly a living ale. Texture is thick a kind of papery, while zesty and not quite dry. Great Belgian dark ale with some of the spice elements of the quadruple style.

Bottle 750ml @ haakonm
Pours clear dark ruby brown with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, bread, toffee, dried fruits and brown sugar. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and light bitter with a long warm caramel finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Shag (2439) - Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA - APR 19, 2013
This poured a dark brown color with a reddish hue. The aroma is complex with some chocolate, caramel, spices, and herbal notes. The flavor is rather malty with some dark fruit, chocolate, spices, and alcohol. The aftertaste contains some sweet and boozy notes. Overall this was a pretty good belgian.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Cirrhosis (1071) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - MAR 28, 2013
Cola brown, with a thin film floating on top. Hints of red wine, plum, brown sugar................ all very faint. Taste is faint, sugar, cherry, toasted malt, oaky, watery. This is a bit of a let down. Completely tasty, completely forgettable.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Marko (3612) - Split, CROATIA - MAR 20, 2013
Strange that I didn’t have anything from them thus far. On tap I guess at Moeder Lambic Fontainas. Poured a veeery dark red with an off white head. Slightly flowery smooth dark malts aroma, sweet. Quite nice. Rosewater-like notes, malty, extremely well balanced. And my notes don’t elaborate anything further, but I did enjoy it.

This is one great beer from Val-Dieu. The beer packs a great dark color and strong taste that doesn’t linger very long. Top notch!
