Sigmund (1961), Hafrsfjord, Norway Jul 24, 2003 Draught, sampled at Gla'mat festivalen, Stavanger. Unfortunately served far too cold. This is a good dark amber/brown ale (and Norwegian ales are rare!), not a stout as the name implies. Slightly cloudy appearance. Moderately hopped, malty well balanced rounded flavour. Hints of yeast. Caramel malts must be among the 5 types used. This "farm brewery" is about two years old, built in an old sheepshed! Their 2 ales are mainly available in Valdres, mostly draught but some of their production is bottled too. They also have a tiny pub at the brewery that's open only Friday nights, or at other hours for groups by appointment. larsga (2319), Oslo, Norway Dec 30, 2006 Creamy offwhite mid-sized head. Dark red translucent body. Dusty earthy chocolate aroma with strong barnyard notes and dry, peppery notes. Watery dry cocoa powder and earth taste with hardly any aftertaste. Faint pea-like mealy chocolate taste lingers. This beer would have benefited from more body; a heavier, stronger version could have been a fantastic beer. (0.75l bottle from Fenaknoken in Oslo. BB was March 2007.) thebeertourist (1889), Oslo, Norway Jun 30, 2007 75 cl bottle bought at Fenakroken, Oslo. Deep copper with a medium beige head. Good milk chocolate aroma. Good fruity and chocolatey flavours, dryer finish. A bit light body for all the taste. Nice. Gr0ve (1116), Oslo, Norway Dec 30, 2006 750 ml bottle. Chestnut coloured and crystal clear. Medium-sized beige head. Dusty aroma with distant chocolate. Certain earthiness. Very interesting aroma, much reminiscent of wild fermentations. Could it be old hops? Cacao powder flavour at first, then a little malts. A bit watery, but probably because of the low alcohol content. Finishes with quite a bit more cacao in the finish. Some distant hops in the background. Rune (1811), Tromsø, Norway Nov 26, 2006 On Tuesday 21.11.2006 I bought a Kvek and a Staut at Fenaknoken in Oslo, both bottles with bb; 18.01.07. The Kvek had however turned sour and was impossible to drink. I believe this is due not to the brewery, but has to do with the storeroom condition at Fenaknoken. Be aware of this if you ever are going to buy beer from Valdres Gardsbryggeri at their outlet in Oslo. Nothing wrong with the Staut. 750ml bottle. The flip-top cork gave a good shot when opened. Clear and very dark brown in colour. Small beige head. Grainy malted aroma with coffee notes. Roasted malt in flavour supported by corn-like sweetness. A proper Norwegian ale (24.11.2006).
