Hand pulled pint in a straight sleeve glass, poured at my local Spoon’s on a Wednesday ‘Real Ale Day’ during Sep 2011 (all cask beers at £1.89 a pint). Amber, dirty golden coloured body, almost clear, but no quite. On top an off-white head of tight bubbles. The smell was of grains and grass, with a hoppy citrusy bitter-sweet undertone. Fairly sweet initially on the tongue, but the hops kick in fairly swiftly after that and it certainly has a bitter finish. It has a pronounced grainy feel in its taste and texture, almost gritty in fact, very different to most UK Premium Bitters. I prefer malts and sweeter beers normally, this didn’t fall anywhere near that category, but I still enjoyed drinking it; in fact I had another pint just to make sure I got the flavours right for this review. Interesting brew, the first I’ve had from this brewery, I’ll look out for more.

Bottle from Marks & Spencer, Metrocentre, Gateshead. Hazy golden coloured with toffee, herbal and peppery hop notes followed by a dry earthy and citrus finish. Nice.

Cask HP at Hamilton Hall as Vale Gravitas, 4.8%. Clear pale golden yellow, still, small thin beige head. Aroma is light and airy, really not much going on. Body is smooth. soft carbonation. Taste is light bready malts, citrus, floral rubbery hops, dry hop character, some elderflower. So drinkable and nuanced. A classic golden ale, done well. Yes it doesn’t blow your head off with flavour but it’s great. I could drink many pints.

*Old rating, cask in the UK. Nice round and smooth beginning. Typical Golden Ale-characteristics, fruity and smooth. Full-bodied with a moderate bitterness in the aftertaste. Fresh floral, very refreshing!

Fairly pale golden, nice rounded lacing and crescent of a white cap. Nose is dry MDF grassy melon. Initial taste is racked nectarine sweetness in abundance which doesn’t fade very quickly. Loose carbonation and fairly heavy in contrasty mouthfeel. Finishes richly sweet, lemon and oddly thinning long strap. Linger is warped citrus, tinny and oddly bitter. Quite brightly sweet but slogged out by wet dough and overly citrus backend. Cask, Foot Of the walk.
