Slight hoppy aroma, reddish colour and to my mind, an old ale rather than a bitter. Nice toffee malt palate ending in a controlled bitter finish. The body generated naturally in this kind of ale tends to counteract the harshness that I have encountered in other Vale beers. In my view, their best to date.

Tasted this ruby ale in the Counting House, Glasgow (JDW) in November 2010. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear red copper in colour with a thin tan head. Good lacing throughout and a thin mouthfeel. Thin green apple fruit in the malty aroma. Pale malts deliver a fiery maltloaf base with hints of redcurrant fruit and slight toffee notes. Distinct tang of crystal malt in this which compliments the biter hop resins in the spicy aftertaste. Dry woody oak note in the sweet malty finish. An ok session ale.

Cask conditioned at a Wetherspoons. Chestnut with white head. A fullish malty body, some roastiness, some fruitiness, berries. There is a dryish leafy hop note for contrast, just enough to maintain interest. Reasonable.

Cask at Pilgrims Progress (JDW), Bedford, after the end of ’Spoons Beer festival ’10. Amber with a small off white head. Sweaty aroma, not appealing. Earthy malt with slight sourness. Mid bitter finish. Didn’t quite work.
