In a word, RICH as a good dubbel ought to be. Tough to find this beauty down in Socal but picked some up at City Beer Store in San Francisco.
Dark fruit notes from sniff to swallow complemented by a soothing alcoholic warmth. Tremendous local version of an age old style.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 bhensonb (9093) - Woodland, California, USA - MAR 4, 2011
Bomber from the Co-Op in Davis, CA. Pours very dark brown with a foamy 3 finger beige head. Warm dark malt aromas. Near full bodied. Flavor evinces a touch of heat, but mostly a lot of malt, dark, and I think there’s a lingering note of kandi. Very lightly spicey. I’d suggest it’s not undeserving of consideration as an abbey ale. It’s certainly very good, though perhaps a bit light on spice. There’s just a little. Yummy.

Bottle, sampled at Woodshop Quad, thanks to AgentSteve! Pours a clear dark reddish-brown with a white ring. Rich sweet aroma, of fruit, cherries, malt, and pine. Big sweet and sharp taste, of malt, pine, herbs, and berries. Lingering sweet sharpness. Really tasty.

Bottle from AgentSteve (via Steve the brewer) tried at at Woodshop Quad. I think one of 3 bottles left in existence, with the other two being held by the brewer. Amber color. Malty. Mellowed, but not obvious oxidation. Possible a small hint of sour, but not unpleasant.
