3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 popery (1133) - San Francisco, California, USA - SEP 4, 2009
An excellent, balanced IPA with good bitterness and nice hop flavors. The IPA pours a light amber, right in the normal purview for an IPA. There’s a fluffy white head that sticks around well and good lacing. The aroma is sweet and a bit light but still very good. There are fruity, grapefruit-apricot, notes with a peek of the caramel malt. The flavor is bitter and floral. The bitterness is very well-balanced. I’ve had a lot of IPAs recently that have good bitterness but lack delicate hop flavors. Valley’s IPA does not suffer from this problem. It’s floral and juicy, and the bitterness doesn’t outshine the more complex flavors present. Carbonation is relatively light but still about normal for an IPA. There’s an excellent, lingering hoppy aftertaste. The feel is relatively dry but not quite Blind Pig/Pliny level. I’m extremely happy that Valley has started shipping out bottles to San Francisco stores. They are an awesome brewery.
