Big pale brown lasting head. Clear brown body with carbonation. Grainy caramelly taste with earthy spicy notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dry roasty caramelly earthy aftertaste with dusty rye crisp bread notes. Nice, drinkable, unusual. Vivid, too. (0.3l draft at Valmiermuizas alus tirgotava, Riga.)

Pretty good--some caramel/toffee without overly cloying sweetness; light enough to be refreshing (but strong enough to make sessioning a bit harder!)

Aroma is dominated by sweet malt flavor with tones of toast, a bit alco comes through. Color is pleasantly cherry dark red or ruby, clear. Pours with creamy brown top, frothy, lasting enough to be pleasant to eyes. Taste - semi sweet with touch of bitterness from toasted malt, minimal hop flavor. A bit dry finish, pleasant above medium bodied, some far away sourness in late stages; floury, roasted afterpath. Overall - I really start to enjoy those German origin dark beers. Those seems like middle way between light bodied lager types and close to full bodied stouts, porters which you cannot taste more than couple of bottles - they are really stodgy. Bocks, dunkels - pleasantly enjoyable dark beers with unique character of special malt types. To me.

0.5 l bottle, thanks hanniku! Dark amber color. Sweet aroma with bread and dark fruits. Sweet dark bread flavor with toffee, raisins, dark sugar and cocoa. Full body. Feels stronger than 5.8 % and somewhat bock like.

Senka (118) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - SEP 24, 2012
50cl bottle. A bit soapy aroma that blocks nice caramel and cherry aromas. Dark clear red - very beautiful colour for dunkel. Thick head that dissipitates beautifully. Slightly bitter - resembles more of a diluted Baltic porter. Oily, not creamy. Quite flat, but thick and creamy foam is formed when rinsing your mouth. When compared to other dark beers from The Baltic states, this one is quite simple, but very enjoyable beverage. Good with a freshly BBQ’d pork.

TheCellarer (20) - Tromsø, NORWAY - MAY 8, 2012
UPDATED: MAY 21, 2012 500 ml bottle shared at Beer session XIX in Tromsø 220312. Large and frothy beige/tan head that slowly dissolves leaving some fragmented lacing. Medium strength aroma of sweet, dark fruits and roasted caramel. Similar but more hearty flavour with some hops as well. Another nice label from Valmiermuizas befitting one of the more interesting Latvian breweries, of which this beer is a good example.

Bottled 500ml (Stockmann Tallinn, BB 05/2012)
Deep ruby color, small beige head. Toasted coffeish and caramelly aroma with some diacetyl. Medium-bodied. Sweetish, chocolaty flavor. Toasted notes, light tartness in the aftertaste. Not much diacetyl in flavor. Aftertaste has caramel and some bitterness. Good German-style dunkel. One of the best Latvian beers I’ve had (the bar is not very high with Latvian beers).
