- Alcoholpercentage van 8,3% - Redelijk biertje destijds gedronken - Niet verkeerd, maar heb naar mijn smaak veel lekkerder biertjes gedronken - Vandaar mijn niet al te hoge waardering uiteindelijk

UPDATED: JUL 17, 2015 Three grains abbey tripel (like Bosteels’ Tripel Karmeliet) brewed at De Graal by a relatively young beer company. Moussy, lacing, irregular, off-white head over an initially clear, deep ’old gold’ coloured beer with low sparkling. Aroma of gooseberries, sourdough, dried apricot, dried orange peel, strange cava-like smell, grass, stale sweat but not so much that it becomes obnoxious, hint of banana, pineapple, nettles, white bread, coriander seed, flowers, unripe peach, vanilla accent, starfruit and something elusively pear-like (perhaps locally cultivated pears?). Sweetish onset, hint of banana, bit bubblegum (white candi sugar syrup?), pineapple, gooseberry and some passion fruit, so very estery to begin with, with a soft sour berry accent and medium carbo; gentle bready maltiness ensues, bit honeyish with a very soft, soapy wheat malt sweetishness to it, ’green malts’ and green apple peel touch, smooth, little bit syrupy, with a finish of grassy and lightly peppery hops rendering it a deep, leafy bitterishness; the malt sweetness lingers as the last impression, along with yeast fruitiness, a drying, somewhat resiny, bittersweet coriander effect and, lastly, a quite harsh presence of young ’jenever’-like alcohol, not only warming as it should be in this style, but a bit wry as well. In all, pretty decent tripel, seems to have become a bit more confident since I last tasted it two years ago. Strangely, the label claims this to be a ’three grains tripel’, yet the ingredients list only mentions barley and wheat. I assume some rye malt has been thrown in, which might explain the dull spiciness. In any case: nice attempt with enough complexity and ’mystery’ to it, but most of all too alcoholic and too sweet to be a truly great tripel. Yet it does feel kind of ’natural’ and has no real off-flavours (anymore), so this is not the worst tripel I tasted, by far.

Bottle 33cl. Clear deep golden color, small frothy white head, good retention, good lacing; perfumed nose, sweet malts, candy sugar, yeasty, some peach, light banana; taste moderate sweet, slightly bitter, fruity notes; medium body, creamy texture, bit peppery on the tongue, average carbonation; finish mild sweetbitter, herbal notes.

Een tripel zoals er zovelen zijn. De geur en de smaak zijn typisch zoals de meeste tripels zijn
