Brewed since the beginning of last century, when the near-complete staff of the brewery went to see the circus of Buffalo Bill, leaving the boiling brewing kettle to the care of the youngest employee. This boy let the beer roast and caramelise on the bottom of the kettle, but after trying, everybody actually liked the "spoiled" beer, which became the brewery’s staple diet. This Belgian version is a lot weaker than the stout exported to the USA.

UPDATED: MAY 30, 2008 Bottled. Dark amber colour, small beige head. Alcohol and plum in flavour and aroma, quite pleasant mix. Also a lot of caramel malts and some slight sugaryness. Flavour is caramel malts, very sweet with not too much hops noteable. Sticky palate. Some hints of apricot found in aftertaste.

(Bottle 25 cl) 5,7% ABV in my version. Dark brown, but far from black. Small tan head. Roasted almost burned malty notes and distinctively dry with a very light body. Actually rather refreshing. Never really considered this a Stout though. 260598

Bottled. Clear ruby. Buttery aroma with some blackberries. Sweet and rounded, fairly roasty with clean mouthfeel and low hop rate. Drier finish. An easy going, well balanced ale.

At Zythos Beer Festival 2010. Bright maroon color, large amount of lacing. Aroma of burnt espresso. Taste starts sweet, the progresses to Starbucks and bitter cocoa. Nice enough.

Dark mahogany color; persistent thin head. The aroma is a bit vinous, but also smells like rotten grapes. The flavor is smooth, with some sweetness, and just a touch of woody complexity, not enough, no fruitness nor sourness. Not my kind.

Tap at DHL during Paul’s pre-wedding weekend. Pours brown with a soft, beige foam head. Dark sugar, caramel and toast aroma. Medium sweet flavor, nicely balanced with some dark fruits, currants, toffee and candi sugar. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Toasty sugar finish, lightly sticky sweet with more dark candi sugar and also some mild licorice. Very nice beer. Has some intriguing characteristics.
