COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ingredients and techniques from two different areas come together to produce the beer in this bottle. Van Twee (From Two) is the remarkable result of a collaboration between two breweries know for extreme innovation: Bell’s Brewery of Kalamazoo, MI and De Proef Brouwerij of Lochristi, Belgium. Special emphasis was placed on using ingredients from both Belgium and Michigan in designing this beer. Michigan is renowned for producing sour, dark cherries of superior quality, and a significant quantity of cherry juice was added to the brew. Deep hued Belgian candi sugar adds to the complex flavor of the beer. The sugar used for bottle conditioning came from native Michigan sugar beets. A finishing fermentation with vinous Brettanomyces strain of yeast complements the unique New Zealand hop variety, Nelson Sauvin. The result is broadly a cherry infused ’mash-up’ of the porter and dubbel styles, brewed to an original gravity of 1.072 and fermented with multiple strains of yeast. Each ingredient used brings a subtle hint of a varied fruit such as plum/prune from the roasted malts; gooseberry/grape from the hops; pear/banana from the yeast and specialty sugar; and of course cherry. These flavors are wrapped in a rich and complex roasted malt base that imparts flavors reminiscent of chocolate and coffee--much like the famous filled chocolates of Belgium. We hope you enjoy drinking this beer as much as we enjoyed making it for you.

Bottle from Corvallis Brew Supply, Corvallis. Pours almost black reddish brown, moderate amount of tan head. Aroma slightly boozy, Bourbon, cherries, dried fruit, not much Brett. Body very lively, surprisingly bitter, sweetness, chili powder, candi sugar, vinous/tart, oaky character. SUblime and complex, de Proef are wonderfully underrated.

From Brett’s fridge (previously from Luekens Liquor). Brief note: cherry, burnt sugar, very light tart, little warm. Tasty and drinkable. 7.8

750 ml bottle. I’m thinking this is about four and a half years old. Aroma is complex, with cherries, chocolate, Brett, toffee. Pours a dark brown to mahogany with a two finger tan head with excellent retention. Taste is earthy, lightly sweet and somewhat tart from the cherries. Thin-bodied with a fairly light body. The Brett comes out more as it warms. Nice beer.

750 ml bottle, thanks Poisoneddwarf- Pours very dark brown with a nice tan head. Aroma is brett, barnyard funk, cherries, barrel, tart. The taste is tart, funky, cherries, the roasted grains of the porter shows up in the finish. Big surprise with this one, was expecting something more malty, very nice.

Shared by the Atlanta Fantasy Football Crew. Pours brown with a thin off white. Aroma of ripe fruits, cherries, spices, cola. Taste was cherry candy, molasses, some cocoa, spices. Slightly weird finish of off yeast. Not bad at all, but perhaps just a bit of something that I cannot find words to describe.

Dark brown colored pour. Huge dark tan head. Plenty of lacing. Big sour aroma of dark cherries and pits. Some chocolate notes as well. Chocolate flavor right up front. Sweet milk chocolate. There is some of the cherry in the back. Pretty good.

Pours dark roasted chestnut unclear with a decent creamy and lacey darker beige head. The aroma has slight cherry juice and wild yeast astringency. The flavor brings the wild yeast as well, with light sweet fruity notes that settle delicately on the palate. I remember much bigger flavor, especially from the cherry juice. I think I sat on it too long.

Aromas of cherries, grapes, and bananas. Flavors of some darkness and a mild sweet finish.
