COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sea Dog is an amber ale fashioned after the German Altbier style. Like a true Altbier, it is fermented with ale yeast, but at a colder lager temperature. This gives it a clean finish with no esters like a lager, but retaining the malty quality of an ale. Its deep copper colour comes from a heavy addition of dark crystal malt, and a touch of chocolate malt. Sea Dog is lightly bittered, so as to not mask it’s intense maltyness. Most of its hop character comes from a heavy dose of Willamette and Hallertauer hops at the very end of the boil.

A very forgettable beer. Only remarkable thing here is a little tin, maybe iron - not sure as I have difficulty distinguishing my metals. A little hops at the end, but finishes generally sour. Pours maroon with ok head and lacing. On tap at brewery.

Draught at Malone’s Urban Drinkery, Vancouver
Dark amber to brown color, clean, with persistent beige creamy head. The aroma is mild, and strangely it’s fruity (peach and apricots), followed by the idea of caramel. It has a very light caramel flavor with some more peachy fruitiness; the bitterness is very low, and there is a very light dusty impression too.
Peculiar, drinkable, easy, not bad. But Altbier is a different thing; in any case, apart from the peachy character, there is not much else going on here.

Beautiful dark copper colour. Nice nose of chocolaty cocoa with groud coffee beans. I might not be accurately describing but that is what comes to mind. As with other descriptions i feel it a bit watery on the palate. Decent but not worth chasing.

UPDATED: OCT 6, 2012 Small bottle at Hops in New West, in a pilsner glass. Very dark copper in color. A very pleasant malty character here. Further notes to come.

Yup, this one sorta grows on you! Very pleasant and refreshing. A nice fall beer.

Sampled (2 - 4oz samples) at VCBW 2012 at the Salt Building in Vancouver poured amberin color with a finger of white head that leaves very little lacing behind. Aroma is mild caramel and light hops. Light to medium bodied with mild carbonation. As far as amber ales go, this one is easy to drink and somewhat tasty, but there are better choices for this style as this one is just average.

(Small bottle from the brewery; they sell them individually if you want to try without buying a case) I never would have guessed this is an altbier. Not in a million years. I can’t pick up the German malts or hops... I can’t pick up much of anything really. Almost as boring as a macrobrew pale lager. But at least it’s not metallic like one of those, it’s just watery. I’m picking up some crystal malt... but it can’t be, can it? In an alt? The one outstanding thing about this is its beautiful hue.

Amber, small beige head. Carmel nose. Vague carmel palate, with a hint of finishing hops. Easy drinking, but nothing stands out

I wouldn’t call this an alt either. Dark amber and clear. Caramel and amll toast present. Mouthfeel is thin and hop presence small to none. I didn’t particularly enjoy it.

Pint at ocean side inn. So bland as to be anonymous. Nothing to disgust nor excite leaves this beer in a watery mess.
