maltdog (429), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jun 25, 2008 Cochonne: French for “sow”. My 75cl bottle features a trippin’ label: a pig in makeup, endowed with enormous human breasts, wearing an “I love men” teeshirt, and toweling her private parts The cork comes out squished and misshapen, and smelling of TCA (cork taint). Pouring a foggy pale copper with a rush of thin, fizzy effervescence leaves a barely carbonated beverage. My nose picks out a confusion of mingled auras…dark toast, Velveeta, oak, allspice, grape soda, and smoke emerge from this odd concoction. The beer reassures the partaker with caramel sweetness contrasting successfully against tart fruit- sour cherry and lemonade- before unleashing the lambic wildness: tangy lactic sting, corky dankness, goaty and fishy flavors, and a salty/smoky aftertaste. Holy cow... this harmless looking liquid is as biologically active as Hef’s jacuzzi . Zesty acidity razors through an otherwise lifeless, oily medium mouthfeel, and the hefty abv remains hidden throughout. Charmingly unruly “farmhouse” funk enlivens what would have been a boring amber ale… but those same qualities run amok prevent it from being better. Cochonne seems to have evolved more from luck than planning.
nearbeer (1316), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Aug 25, 2008 750 ml. Foggy copper with a small but lasting, creamy head and a frosty residue on the glass. Woody, white wine aroma also has some sourish-yeasty funk and light vinegar. Flavor is similar but has more caramel apple-brown sugar and dark berry up front to provide some body. Turns more to tart apple-berry with the bitter apple core; then ends with a blend of caramel, oak, toasted pecan and cider vinegar. Light body is dry, acidic-tingly and soft on the carbonation. Refreshing summertime drink. Pours copper with a white head. Aroma has spice, fruit, and a bit of sour berry. Medium body. Lightly sweet flavor, with fruits and spices. Ends on a funky sour note. Not bad. BoBoChamp (719), Gent, Belgium Jul 27, 2008 33cl, alias Cochonnette, from Geers Oostakker, complex, balanced, cloudy, good head, good brew thegreenrooster (1514), St.louis, Missouri, USA Jul 18, 2008 Pour is a dark red with a large tan head. Aroma at first was a little skunky thanks the the green bottle but things changed quickly. Lots of sour fruit followed with some spice and funk. Flavor is again super sour fruit with a large spice with a heavy breadyness. Finish has some barnyard-horseblanket or whatever you call it funk. This is a very good beer at a decent price and something to look for.
