Tasted this in the Salt Cot, Saltcoats (JDW) in April 2012. Cask, handpump dispense. Dull black in colour with a thick creamy tan head. strong aroma of burnt toast and drinking chocolate powder. Thick creamy mouthfeel and superb lacing. Dark malts give a burnt toast flavour initially which soon gives way to strong notes of sweet molasses, mocha coffee and liquorice. Bitter chicory flavour evident in the roasted aftertaste. Finish is very smooth, malty and robust. Dry with liquorice and treacle toffee notes. A really good strong stout and highly recommended.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 BlackHaddock (2353) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 7, 2012
Looks grand: Stout black with a biege creamy head on top.
Burnt/roasted/toasted malts with no sweetness in the nose and taste: black coffee beans and dark chocolate notes make up the flavours.
Not as rich or creamy as it looked: had some depth of body but it wasn’t full enough in my eyes.
Decent and interesting: I’d certainly have another if it comes around again.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Leighton (6955) - London, ENGLAND - APR 5, 2012
Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW and Masque Haunt, JDW, both London. Pours dark brown with a foamy, beige head. Some ashy roast in the aroma. Medium sweet flavor, lightly roasty with some dry earth, bittersweet cocoa, light wood, tobacco. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Dry, roasty finish, ashy with notes of baking cocoa and burnt dark sugar. There’s some lasting bitter cocoa. Not bad at all. Really more of a sturdy stout than an impy, but it’s a good beer either way.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 DruncanVeasey (6114) - NUNEATON, Blue Square Premier, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - MAR 31, 2012
The Felix, Nuneaton, 31/03/12. Obsidian with a level manila top. Weak oaken aroma; sickbowl, Southern Comfort. Soapy, slightly vomit-accented with crude burnt fennel seed notes; hints of plum, dried fruits. Pronounced alcohol finish. Unsubtle, insipid and not very good beside the other dark treasures on the table.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Nocturne (381) - Cheshire, ENGLAND - MAR 31, 2012
Cask at JDW. Very dark with a beige head. Aroma of smoke and treacle that doesn’t really jump out of the glass. Surprisingly fruity up front with a nice dark chocolate bitterness. Definite blackcurrant vibe. Body is good but slightly watery at times. Roasted, fruity finish with a tiny bit of heat. Strong effort here that I was glad to sample.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 imdownthepub (8470) - Banbury, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - MAR 31, 2012
Cask conditioned at a Wetherspoons. Black with tan head. Quite a sweetish, smooth and fruity beer, there is a background of dark chocolate, again sweetish, there is a fruitiness, not as intense as I was expecting. There is a late sharpness, bitterness. It was a decent beer certainly, but I am not sure it is an Imperial Stout.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 JohnRMurdoch (2253) - Glasgow, SCOTLAND - MAR 30, 2012
UPDATED: MAR 31, 2012 Cask @ The Henglers Circus. Dry coffee aroma. Dark brown colour, good head. Toasted coffee flavour. Light and creamy, unusual for an imperial stout. Does not feel like a 6.5% beer.
4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 worldbeertaste (1121) - Lancashire, ENGLAND - MAR 30, 2012
Solid black with a thick tan lasting head. Deep chocolate roasted malt. Some flowery elements. Full creamy body. Rich taste of chocolate, roast malt with a full creamy sweetness. Just keeps me coming back. Light berry elements. Amazing
