Cask: Special - Wetherspoon Spring 2013 Real Ale Festival.
This is complex and full flavoured, with sweet and roast malt flavours, balanced by a pungent hop bitterness and dry hop flourish in the finish.

March 2013. JDW, Rochester. Mmm. This is interesting. A tasty beer with good malt character and strong bittering hops which are quite herby. The malt is quite bready and there are pleasant and intriguing yeast notes. A damn fine beer, though not quite gorgeous enough to be a firm favourite.

Cask at the Moon Under Water (JDW), Watford on 10 April 2013. Poured a clear, bright ruby with a dense, off white head. Aroma of red current, strong grassy hops and salted caramel. Well rounded initial flavours; nice hop bitterness, mixed with biscuity malt and berries. Finish was dry, bitter resin and dry grain.

Tasted 18/4/2013 draught "The Bell", Amesbury, Wiltshire. Poured a semi-translucent mahogany with a thin white bubble line for a head. No lacing. No carbonation bubbles. Aroma of sweet malt plus floral hops. Taste of very sweet malt followed by a pleasant slight hops bitterness. Light to medium body. Short, smooth, subtle hops bitterness on the finish. Pleasant, nice.

[Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading] Deep amder-red with a moderate cream head and a light fizz. Toffe up front with a smattering of pine & grapefruit in a lightly bitter finish. Seemed a bit simple for a beer of this ABV, but pleasant enough.

The Baron of Hinckley. Raspberry red with a fat cream collar. Sticky fudge, liquorice confectionery, big raspberry and red berry, filter coffee aroma. Fruity, full of berries and coffee, well hopped, Tropical Starburst undercurrents; bitter walnut husk and cranberry hints. Nothing like the sticky boozy blandness I was expecting. Bitter chocolate shavings. Reminds me of the Vikings Return from a few festivals back. Last beer of the fest...and the best?
