AMAZING!!! This isn’t horrible. OK, now that we have that out of the way, it isn’t brilliant, but somehow they have made a beer that is not horrible. Rather than launch a new beer, Fosters have just created a VB sub brand which isn’t the dummest move in the world and this is fairly and squarely aimed at the Kirin and Becks drinkers. Packaged in a similar bottle to Becks, it is advertising this is brewed with 4 ingredients only, Malt, Hops, Yeast & Water. Hang on a sec, shouldn’t all their other beers contain the same mere 4 ingredients? Obviously not, which confirms what we all knew. Anyway, the beer itself, aroma is a slightly skunky/hoppy aroma, appearence is medium straw with an initially big head that thins out quickly. Flavour is a bit on the thin side, there is an initial touch of white peach and a slight bitterness at the end. If imitation is a form of flattery, there are a few brewers out there who must be feeling a bit flattered.

Bottle. This was a real surprise. Since I consider VB an abomination of a beer and the recent trend in low carb beers to be a marketting gimmick for some other dreadfull beers, such as Bondi Blonde, I really wasn’t expecting a lot from a VB low carb beer. However, it’s OK. It’s not great, but there is nothing actually wrong with it, but there is plenty of room for improvement. It’s clear straw / pale gold. There is not much of an aroma, but what there is is vegetably hops. It has medium to light body and medium carbonation. The taste is rather on the light side but has is slightly sweet pale malt with a touch of hops giving some bitterness, although with a vegetably and metallic edge. Overall it’s an OK, refreshing beer with a bit of character, but could do with more. It’s not a bad effort for a mainstream brewer.

355ml bottle. Pale and pasty thin and watery looking with a soft pearl head. Familiar aroma of mass produced pale lagers with a skunkiness coming through. Dry finish with medium bitterness.

One of my more bogan friends conned me into trying this, otherwise I would have probably avoided it. Drank it straight out of the bottle, bogan style. Wasn’t expecting anything good from something with the VB logo on it, but holy shit, the aroma of this is EXACTLY like Steinlager, very fresh, lots of greenery and citrus. Have we stumbled upon something decent? Took a sip, and the flavour was once again reminiscent of Steinlager but sadly quite a bit more watery, although on a stinking hot day that would be nice. I was starting to doubt that CUB were responsible for this beer at all, until I swallowed it. The palate was pure Carlton Draught, dry, moderately bitter and very rust esque, although not as strong as the aforementioned. This one is nothing remotely special, it may seem as if I’ve rated it a bit highly but considering the abominations CUB bombard us with on a regular basis, this is like a shining nugget of gold. Far better then you’d imagine.

The bloke at the bottle shop described this as ’reconstituted camel urine’ when I bought it so was expecting something truely dire. Was just another bland marketing based low carb watery bland mess with a touch of the slightest beer. Seriously for the Oz summer 10 this is about the 6th of these new boring low carb dry beers I have had. Gets more and more watery as it warms up.

Bottle - Light yellow with a small white head. Light cereal malt aroma with a very little bit metallic maybe even a hint of citrus. Light malt flavour, which is qite smooth and lingers. Average carbonation, dry bitter finish. Not a fan of VB but this nothing like its namesake and is actually quite palatable!
