Vedett, a blond, light, well hopped premium beer with 5.2% alcohol content, is the cult Duvel Moortgat beer today: following its birth in 1945, it quickly acquired fame and recognition within an intimate circle of insiders in the Antwerp-Brussels region. But do not think for a moment that this oldtimer is thinking about retirement, quite the contrary. For the past years, Vedett has been going through a second childhood in a number of trendy cafés located mainly in big cities. The secret of its charm? A retro-look, a capricious taste, Vedett-allure and the "golden touch" of the brewery. These past years, the brewery armed Vedett with an innovative, hip, young and slightly absurd image. A successful strategy, especially with the youth: Right now, you'll find Vedett in Belgian Delhaize supermarkets and most Flemish cities as well as in Brussels. And the follow-up to the story? You can read it at www.vedett.com.

Old rating rerated 12.12.2014, 0,33l bottle shared @ hotel room in Oslo:
Small shortlasting head, very light color. Aroma is mild grainy, weeds, wet grain, cereal, flowers, sour hay. Taste is mild floral, wet hay, weeds, flowers, paper, medicine, cereal. Little bitterness, harsh watery mouthfeel. So boring.

Strong carbonation. I’ve burped twice so far. There’s something in its taste which reminds me of my childhood trips to the farms. It tastes something that is very close to the cows. Probably the dung. That must be it.

Bière sans aucun intérêt.Odeur de transpiration. Palais inexistant. Goût très légèrement houblonné. Le goût n’est simplement pas bon, pas besoins de le décrire.

Can - pale golden, lively body and a bubbly white head. Okay retention and okay lacing. Aroma of lager malts, butter and some hints of vanilla and flowers. Taste of lager malts, light grass, hints of lemon peel, a little dried fruit and a light bitterness. Medium body, medium carbonation. Well I feel stupid for expecting something good.

Can@the avion, aldridge. Golden beer with medium head. Arpma is grass, floral hops and pale malts. Taste follows suit with a crisp finish. Decent enough for a lager.

Moortgat’s most successful beer after Duvel, a standard lager named after a beer they made decades ago but now experiencing a remarkable come-back, using a gimmick in which you can have your picture printed on the back label (a couple of my friends actually did this). Qualifies as an ’export’ in the old Belgian sense of the word, i.e. pale lager bottled on 33 cl. Pale golden blonde colour, cristal clear with quiet fizz, under a moussy, snow white, sticky head. Aroma at first very much lightstruck (the familiar, horrible ammonia-like smell of cat pee) which lasts for an uncomfortably long time; otherwise rather weak, with hints of herbal and slightly soapy hops, slightly sourish graininess, some bready pale malt sweetness, young cheese, faint hint of iron but not disturbingly so. Taste begins neutral, minerally with strong and sharp, tingling carbonation, smooth, light malt sweet, grainy, thinnish palate, ’German’, leafy and somewhat peppery hop bitterness in the finish, lasting longer than usual in a pale lager and sort of making up for the neutral onset, bready maltiness lingering a bit as well. Finishes better and more crisp than it starts, I’d reckon this is slightly above average in Belgian standard macro lagers. Too bad for that awful lightstruck smell, though, but this never happens when you taste it from tap of course, which I’d recommend over the gimmick bottles; I will therefore take the tap version into account for this rating.
