COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Vintage 2011: What you have here is quite rare and special. We take 1-year old Imperial Stout, age it in Cognac Barrels for 6 months, then carefully blend it at a very rich ratio of 1:2 with this year’s Imperial Stout. Rich powerful vanilla and sweet grape notes come through in waves, complimented by subtle cognac esters and supported by the big roasty malt backbone of the base stout. This beer can be enjoyed now or cellared for many years to come.

Draft at big wood. Deep black with scant tan ring of carbonation. Sweet dark fruit, raisins, apple, dark dried cherries, hint of tart and low underlying roast with tame barrel character. Up front some smokey malt is present, little bit of apple tartness and cognac, light roast, a bit of coco nib in the finish.

On tap at PIB, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of cognac, roasted malt, and liqueur coated chocolate. Flavour is even more complex, with notes of cognac, cherries, and chocolate. The barrel aging certainly has done this wonders, making it less sludgy and more drinkable. Much improved from the base beer.

Tap @ PIB (Labeled as Mad Viking Cognac Barrel Night Raid)... Poured jet black with a moderate, brown head. This was definitely the buzz beer within our group. Very big booze tones that lent to a vinous cognac character. Bit roasted notes and a strong wood presence. This was intense with a flavor profile that seemed to offer something different with each sip. For PIB, which was ultimately a let down, this beer sort of saved the day.

On tap at seattle brew fest. Pitch black some tan head. Aroma of caramel, coffee, milk. Tastes smokey, rancid fruity tang, oaky a bit harsh and acidic on the palate. Also some maple syrup flavor. I also tried the regular (non-barrel aged) one and it seemed better because more the the maple flavor came out.

650. Pours jet black with a loose, creamy dark tan head. Sweet chocolate and darkly sweet vinous notes on the nose. They cancel each other out slightly (each seems like it would be more intense on its own without the other), But they work well together, and what they create together smells delicious even if it is subdued. Creamy thick body. Soft carb...not going flat at all but it’s very mild. Chocolate, roast, a little hint of coffee lurking, and nice sweet fruit sugar vinous overtones from the barrel, along with some nice vanilla. Long sweet finish with great undertones from the malt bill. Really good.

On tap at ØlFestival 2012. Looking quite nice this one, with it’s almost black body and tan head. Nice aroma too, licorice, roasted malts, some alcohol and a touch of the cognac. Lacking a bit on complexity in both aroma and flavor I think. The flavor is quite sweet, with roasted malts, coffee, alcohol and some cognac. Full-bodied, warming and smooth on the palate, with some roasted kind of bitterness in the end. A bit warm and simple maybe, but a fine beer anyway. 120510
