3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Very dark amber colour, hazy, medium thick head which was quick to disappear but some lacing was retained. Aroma was smoked malt, smoke was there but not overbearing. Tasted hints of rasperry and oak, tasted sweeter than other smoked beers, smoke was present but ubderstated, well balanced. Texture was slightly thick, smooth texture, not much carbonation. Enjoyed it, nice to have a smoked beer without too much smoke.

Served in the Castle Hotel Burg Veldenstein, Neuhaus Pegnitz, Franconia which acts as a tap house for the Veldenstein/Kaiser Brau range (Nov ’11).
Served in a stone/porcalain tankard so difficult to fully appreciate the colour but appeared a mid copper brown, not too dark, not as dark as other Rauchbiers I’ve had.
Lightly smoked rauch, nowhere near as intense as others.
Other flavours peeping through past the smoking were oaky/wood and toffee.
A little grainy on the palate.

Bottled, thanks oh6gdx! Hazy nut brown, small creamy head. Mild salami smoke aroma. Mid sweet with medium body and soft mouthfeel. Smoked meat and licorice, mixed with sugar and dough. Fairly low bitterness. Nice mid-intensity rauchbier, on the sweeter side.

Swing-top by 09.05.12. Nose is smoky but not overdone, and there are also notes of roast coming out; at this point, I’m reminded less of Bamberg’s most famous hammy beechwood smoke, and more of chocolate and anise, though in small dose. Deep blood color and a soapy tan head. Taste is semi-sweet with smoke and fruit, light wood. Slick medium body. The smoke lingering in the aftertaste is gentle and refined, and despite a general lack of carbonation (quite flat, actually), there’s nothing dull here! Mild citrus, sprites, and an engaging old-timers feel.
