hrabren (142) - Zagreb, CROATIA - JAN 12, 2013
This beer was known as one of the first Croatian microbrewery products, produced in a small brewery in a town of Pazarište, near Gospić in Croatian mountain region, famous for its clear spring water, which is also used in production of this brew. It was considered as one of the best Croatian beers, due to the fact it wasn’t pasteurized and produced in small amounts, being also rare and hard to find until fairly recently. Quality of this beer fell with use of additives for preservation so now it tastes more similar to macro Dunkels. Nevertheless, it is still good. I’ve had it many times since 2005, but I’m only rating it now. Pours dark brown with orange tint and quickly diminishing beige head. Weak aroma of malts and nuts, you won’t notice it if the beer is to cold. Medium body, but a full malty taste, not many hops here, low carbonation, well balanced. Ends with a dry finish. Highly recommended.

Bottled, tnx Ivica ! Dark brown colour with thick but quickly diminishing beige head. Complex nose with sweet dark fruits. Aroma is dark fruits like raising and heavy sweet malts. Flavour is malts, dried plums and mild bitterness. Nice dunkel!

ElDesmadre (2279) - Mikołów, POLAND - SEP 12, 2012
Bottle. Dark brown with a poor head. Caramel, cocoa, vanilla and some coffee in the aroma. Tastes a bit like a Czech dunkel but has the dryness of a schwarzbier. Medium bitterness, aftertaste of vanilla and coffee. Too well attenuated, hence alcoholic. Because of the astringency in the finish, the beer became a bit tiresome after the first half. Unfortunately, since it’s got potential.

UPDATED: MAR 12, 2013 33cl bottle (6,1%) in a café in Split (June 2009). Pours dark brown with a tan head. Nice surprise to find another decent dark beer in Croatia. Malty aroma with caramel and some roasty notes. Not as good as Tomislav in my opinion, but an undisputed second place for me on this trip.

0,5 l green bottle from Ivana Trgovina, Split; enjoyed on Hvar. Clear deep mahogany with a dense light brown fingerthick head that leaves excellent lacing. Dark toffee, caramel sauce, butter and malts on the nose. Medium to full body. Sweet and toasted. Notes of roasted nuts. Smooth. Nice mellow bitterness with toasted notes in the finish. Dry mouth. Recommended.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2015 Really went downhill recently, bitter-sweet and nutty taste got weaker. Like most Croatian darks it is more on the sweet side, much less than Tomislav though, not so strong any more and currently medium bodied.

Nice aroma, appearance, taste and palate. Decent, somewhat memorable. Rated in the past from the bottle.

For my taste this is the best dark beer in Croatia. It’s brewed in small brewery without preservants. Dark brown color. It’s not heavy but it is rich, moderately sweet, preasant and drinkable. Whenever I have a chance to drink this beer I must drink it. :-)
