3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottled:Aroma is light sweet, roasty with intensive caramel and cacao notes. Black color with brownish creamy head. Malty, light sweet flavor, followed by a light sourly, salty note. Roasted malt and coffee notes in the end. Dry bitterness, a bit thin. Complex but quite light bodied for 6.1%.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: FEB 19, 2008 New review (February 2008)
Why did I decide to rerate it? Basically, I havenít had a bottle as good as the first few for two years now (more perhaps) and it simply cannot be called a porter. Donít know if the recipe was changed, probably, but it isnít nowhere as good as it used to be.
Poured a dark red-black body with a medium sized tan head that went away fast. The nose is weak, a touch of roastiness but mostly caramel malt. Sweetish. The taste simply is simply... ordinary. Caramel malt and nickels. Thatís it. Almost no hopiness. The mouthfeel isnít the nicest one around either... minerally for a lack of a better expression, a touch of salt. A half assed Dunkel that lacks the appeal it once had. Not the best dark in Croatia anymore. Not even the second best dark in Croatia, and probably not even the third. I feel a bit unpatriotic lowering the score of my countryís highest rated beer, but letís face it. This is nowhere near a 4.4 anymore.
Old review (June 2005)
One of the most elusive Croatian brews, and without a doubt one of the best 2 Croatian brews. Yes, there are two world class porters brewed in Croatia. 0.5l bottle. Dark near black brown colour, fizzy, medium sized tan head that dissipates at a medium pace. Strong nose, coffee, liquorice, caramel, some dark fruit. Nice and complex. The taste is complex as well, dominated by a strong roastiness mingling with hoppy bitterness, some really pleasant underlying fruitiness. The aftertaste isnít that pronounced, toffee like, but it sticks long enough. A classic without any doubt. I have two more bottles waiting for me at a friendís place. Canít wait.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Until yesterday iíve only heard stories about "Velebitsko tamno", also called "Tamno Ličko". I need to call the factory that they give me the phone number of they local distributer in Zagreb, and after ten phonecalls, I finaly get it! I was very surprised!! It has nice dark red colour, very very inviting aroma, and the best drinkability among porters Iíve ever tried. It is not to bitter, just enough, has just perfect strenght for a porter and wonderfull body. I have tought that "Tomislav" is the best croatian porter, but today, I think that "Velebitsko tamno" is just one little step better! Exellent beer, difficult to get but yuo must try it!!

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A dark red brew with an inviting aroma of toffee and bitter hops. The palate is sweetish but not cloying for the strength and it has a very nice liquorice edge to the flavour. Bitterness increases in the finish to leave a sensation of having drunk a good beer. I liked it, but others I was with didn't so maybe it has a bit of character - it's always a bad sign when everyone likes something. (sampled in bottle from a shop in Ogulin, Croatia)
