Glouglouburp (1935), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Apr 7, 2008 Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized descriptions after the express ratings. ----------------------------------------------------------------
How: Tap at brewpub (Pivovar Velkorybnický Hastrman, Velky Rybnik, Czech Republic)
The look: Almost clear copper body with a large off-white head
To me a typical Czech Polotmavé (Czech Amber Lagers) is: Hay and biscuit wrapped in caramel. Very light fruity notes with no specific fruits giving the impression of slightly fruity caramel. Moderately sweet. Sweetness is well balanced by dry grassy hops. Body is smooth. Medium carbonation.
This one: As above but a bit woody and with the some roasted nuts that makes it a with a splendid Czech Polotmavé, maybe my favourite of the trip.
(Rating #1570) MartinT (4316), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Mar 24, 2008 My Bottom Line:
Biscuity almonds and caramel-laced vanilla hug the surfacing spicy, wooden hop finish in this complex and ever-so-friendly Polotmavé.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-Great head formation protects the barely hazy light copper.
-The malt flavors are natural yet clean, forming a nourishing and quenching palate.
-Some apricot fruitiness oozes out of the grain bill.
-The hops are spicy and subtle throughout.
-This is balanced, but somehow showcases the chosen malts more.
On tap at the brewpub.
