Patrickctenchi (3654) - Cox’s Knob, columbus, Indiana, USA - SEP 13, 2014
Bottle: Nearly black with a thin tan head. Chocolate and red wine aroma. Tangy, yeasty, dark fruit and cocoa taste.... Different take on a stout..... Tasty, though.

Brown color, tan head. Aroma of light cocoa. Taste is dry cocoa powder. Not bad.

   AROMA 9/10   APPEARANCE 5/5   TASTE 9/10   PALATE 5/5   OVERALL 19/20
corkyrory66 (575) - BELGIUM - AUG 24, 2014

Bottle. Pours a near-black color with a moderate tan head that disappears really quickly. Nose is slightly roasty, with sweet/sour fruity nose on it, that reminds me a bit of candied sour fruits. Taste is a little sweet and slightly roasty, but has a lot of the Belgian yeast flavor to it. Not exactly my cup of tea.

Alengrin (1716) - BELGIUM - JUL 26, 2014
Verhaeghe’s third Barbe-beer, named after a long-gone brewery in Liège. Winter ale with a yellowish head and near black colour. Aroma of coffee beans, mokka, red berries, iron, soy sauce, caramel; taste subdued fruit with roasted bitterness, bit metallic, bit astringent, thinnish mouthfeel. Everything but a typical full imperial, perhaps better classified as a kind of strong porter?

Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours very dark brown/black with a tan head. Aroma is a little herbal. Med + body. Flavor is "spicy", yeasty dark malt. Heading towards dry. Yeast/spice. Earthy. Even a bit astringent. Certainly not the typical malty "IS".

330 ml bottle into snifter, best before 4/1/2015. Pours nearly opaque black color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of raisin, cherry, plum, toast, molasses, dark bread, light roast, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast malt and fruity/earthy yeast notes; with solid strength. Taste of raisin, plum, cherry, toast, dark bread, molasses, light roast, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light earthy/peppery bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, plum, cherry, toast, dark bread, molasses, light roast, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity/earthy yeast flavors; with a good malt/yeast balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a smooth, crisp, and lightly slick/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice Belgian strong dark ale. Good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity/earthy yeast flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Bottle. This brew is way over priced in the GA locale. It is a fizzy sticky sweet concoction without a whole lot going for it.

Bottle - under the Barbe Black moniker. Black pour with a medium, foamy tan head. Aroma is sweet and fruity with ripened dark fruits, yeast notes, soft chocolate, cocoa and mild roasted malt. Taste is chocolate candy, roasted malt, light coffee, dark fruits, yeast notes and cocoa. Body is medium with a soft, bubbly carbonation. Ends with more cocoa, chocolate notes, dark fruits, yeast, caramel and coffee.
