Bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lasting creamy tan head. Aromas of dark candy sugar, toffee, tobacco, earthiness, light fruittiness and a hint of spice. Palate was medium bodied and crisp. Flavors of toffee, tobacco, earthiness and fruittiness with a crisp lingering tobacco finish.

Alengrin (243) - BELGIUM - JUL 26, 2014
Verhaeghe’s third Barbe-beer, named after a long-gone brewery in Liège. Winter ale with a yellowish head and near black colour. Aroma of coffee beans, mokka, red berries, iron, soy sauce, caramel; taste subdued fruit with roasted bitterness, bit metallic, bit astringent, thinnish mouthfeel. Everything but a typical full imperial, perhaps better classified as a kind of strong porter?

bhensonb (10808) - Woodland, California, USA - MAY 20, 2014
Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours very dark brown/black with a tan head. Aroma is a little herbal. Med + body. Flavor is "spicy", yeasty dark malt. Heading towards dry. Yeast/spice. Earthy. Even a bit astringent. Certainly not the typical malty "IS".

330 ml bottle into snifter, best before 4/1/2015. Pours nearly opaque black color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of raisin, cherry, plum, toast, molasses, dark bread, light roast, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast malt and fruity/earthy yeast notes; with solid strength. Taste of raisin, plum, cherry, toast, dark bread, molasses, light roast, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light earthy/peppery bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, plum, cherry, toast, dark bread, molasses, light roast, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity/earthy yeast flavors; with a good malt/yeast balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a smooth, crisp, and lightly slick/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice Belgian strong dark ale. Good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity/earthy yeast flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Bottle. This brew is way over priced in the GA locale. It is a fizzy sticky sweet concoction without a whole lot going for it.

Bottle - under the Barbe Black moniker. Black pour with a medium, foamy tan head. Aroma is sweet and fruity with ripened dark fruits, yeast notes, soft chocolate, cocoa and mild roasted malt. Taste is chocolate candy, roasted malt, light coffee, dark fruits, yeast notes and cocoa. Body is medium with a soft, bubbly carbonation. Ends with more cocoa, chocolate notes, dark fruits, yeast, caramel and coffee.

Idiosynkrasie (3638) - Bielefeld, GERMANY - MAR 9, 2014
330ml bottle. Ruby red glowing, dark brown colour with huge, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, off-white to beige head. Roasty dark malty aroma, hints of red fruit, a slightly metallic touch, some dust. Taste is initially fruity, dark malty, notes of red berries, later dry, slightly roasty, minimally metallic; lively to fizzy carbonation. Not overly stout-ish, too highly carbonated.

Pas un Stout irlandais, un Stout belge, avec tout ce que cela comporte en saveurs riches, un rien moelleuse...

Bottle. Fruity, spicy nose. Belgian stout. Some berries, honey, chocolate, orange. Shiny pitch black with a nice lacy head. Sweet and spicy, fruity, jammy, berries. Not really a stout, but more like a slightly roasty Belgian dark. Tasty though a bit simple, and light-bodied.
