CampbellWilson (533), Scotland Jan 5, 2006 Bottle from Beers of Europe. I found this quite odd. Hazy amber with diminishing off white head. The aroma was unpleasant and made me think the beer was off - notes of rotten fruit/veg with some stale malt. I’ve had a fair number of Flemish reds and browns and this didn’t smell like any of them. No balsamic notes or soy or cherry. There was something which might have been oak, but the overall smell was not good. I dared a sip and the beer itself tasted very different than expected - initially sweet but with a lactic sourness, an oakiness and something reminiscent of a sweetened lambic ala Timmermans. I had expected a drain pour, but the beer redeemed itself in the taste. Very odd. Hmph.
bierkoning (4738), La Tropica, Netherlands Sep 4, 2008 Bottle. Copper color. Vinous aroma. Malty with hints of cherry. Malty flavor with oak and hints of cherry juice. Slightly tart and vinous. Dry out effect. Hints of citrus and raisin. Very well balanced, albeit just a bit alcoholic. BoBoChamp (651), Gent, Belgium Aug 10, 2008 25cl, from Geers Oostakker, easy to drink, yet complex, clear, small head, good sour brew JoeinUccle (667), Brussels, Belgium Jul 29, 2008 A surprising and impressive beer, this one. 25cL bottle pours a bright and clear reddish-brown, thin layer of white lace. Intense and tart aroma like sour red wine, whiskey-oak, and a bit of sour cherry. Inviting. Flavor is tart and juicy, with cherry and vinous notes, with mild acidity on light and lively mouthfeel. Grape-tangy finish. Wow. Damned interesting, damned likable, and refreshing to boot. JensenTaster (1481), Denmark May 19, 2008 (on bottle) Dark orange, white head. Aroma of champions and kandis, mould too. Very sweet taste, but it has a tad of funk, witch makes it a real gilsdrink, skål, tøser. wacho (43), Izegem, Belgium May 15, 2008 geproeft in Kroegske Oostende.
