Verhaeghe Duchesse De Bourgogne

Bottle. Rich, sweet and sour, fruity nose, predominantly cherry along with other berry-type fruits. Flavor continues with nice sour accents, as per the style of beer, but also more waves of sweet and semi-tart fruit, again dominated by cherries, but opening up to darker fruits as well. Oak creeps in, but is definitely (and appreciably) in the background to all that rich fruitiness. For a beer that some refer to as their guilty pleasure, I didn’t find anything in it to feel guilty about.

Pours dark brown with a slight reddish hue. Nose of an oaky sour cherry with a a lot of malt sweetness balancing it out. A malty fruit flavor with cherries, plums, raspberries, with some subdued oak flavor that finishes with a touch of vanilla. This beer was overall pretty flat. A sort of thick texture, but I think a little bit of carbonation would have spritzed it up nicely.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown/red with a small thick, white head that persists. Leaves a thick lacing in the glass. Aroma of tart raspberries, sourness. After smelling this beer, I expected to drink a very tart, sour beer but I was surprised by this one! Taste is still sour, especially sour apple, but very sweet with apple, pear, other dark fruits, and oak This beer is more of a cross between a sour ale and a belgian ale, I think. For someone who doesn’t particularly like sour ales, I loved this! So drinkable! I wish I had another bottle of this...

FSA - easy drinkable, but as most of these kind of beers it has a little bit of sickly sweet aftertaste. But a single glass is great - therefore IMO go for the small bottles.

Pours a clear dark brown with a creamy tan head and some great lacing. Aroma is mostly fruit, with some sour hop notes. Flavor is all dark fruit, with a hint of alcohol bite on the finish. Those Belgians make some fantastic beers!

Tasted 2008-02-20. Fresh bottle. Pours clear, dark, red/brown with beige head. Aroma: Sour, vinegarish, wood. Flavour: Acidic, apple pie. Very tasty. Dry mouthfeel. Good beer!

Bottle. Poured dark ruby with an off-white head which dissipated to a nice lace. First impression brought to mind balsamic vinegar, though nowhere near as acidic. Rich undertones of fig and prune and a delicate carbonation made it a pleasure to drink.

330 mL bottle. Pours a dark red-brown, with a thick medium head that dissipates in a few minutes. Aroma is strong malt vinegar, with some oak and sweet fruit underneath if you really look for it. Flavor is sweet, fruity and acidic, with fine carbonation. Medium mouthfeel. It’s different, and quite enjoyable, but is definitely not a session ale!
