bitbucket (2026), Kirkland, Washington, USA Oct 7, 2007 On tap a the Stumbling Monk, and served in proper glassware. Pours hazy reddish brown with a thin but dense off-white head. Aroma of tart cherries, lemon, vinegar. Full body and light carbonation. The taste is surprisingly sweet, and the cherry/lemon taste is only vaguely represented. It’s replaced by oxidized apples. A lightly woody, lightly vinous finish. cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 7, 2007 Updated: Jul 11, 2008At the Vintage Estates Octoberfest Beer Tasting Festival in Boardman Ohio. Poured out of champagne bottle with a cork. Aroma is sweet, tart and slightly vinegary, like home made dago red. It makes my mouth water. Looks like light colored rootbeer. Thin tea froth for a head. The initial taste yields interesting and unique flavors. Very complex. Has some tartness mixed in with a somewhat champagne palate. Upper back of throat mild citrus bite. Really nifty on the taste buds. Reminds me a bit of dago red wine mixed with seven up or gingerale. This is more like a champagne than a beer. The taste is morphing, now it reminds me a bit of Cold Duck; a favorite drink of my youth. Finish is rather friendly and warming, no observable bitterness. Really good beer! You would never know it is over 4%, mild session. michael-pollack (2602), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 6, 2007 Draught: Sour aroma. Smells of schmegma, funk, and Limburger cheese. Poured ruby red/brown with a small tan head. Good lacing. Clear. Disgusting sour and tart flavor. Tastes of dark fruit, Limburger cheese, and mold. Medium to full body. Dry texture. Lively carbonation. Dry sour finish. Overall, YUCK! TheBeerBaron (218), Florida, USA Oct 4, 2007 Unusual dark red color, frothly tan head, no visible carbonation. Definite cherry aroma overpowers any other typical beer smells like malt or hops. Smells like a fruit punch or cranberry cocktail. A bubbly light palate. A definite Kriek beer packed with berry - like cherry . Just like the aroma, the fruit dominates all other things one expects from a beer. No hearty malt, no dry hops. Perhaps good for those who dont enjoy beer - the former Zima crowd and new malt vodka types. Its tart and different, but if your looking for a traditional beer, stay away. gottalottaibu (242), charlotte, North Carolina, USA Oct 4, 2007 dark brown/ruby nice head. sweet fruit with a hint of sour akin to a red wine maybe. rich malt with a nice rounded mouthfeel. finish brings out the sourness just enough to let you know its there. even shows signs of a light cherry soda on occassion. like a cheerwine minus the sweetness for you southerners. lovely and easy drinking. one of my favorites. rdelljh (117), Pennsylvania, USA Oct 3, 2007 This was a sweet ale with much carbonation. It reminded me of a malt liquor, perhaps it was because of the subtle sourness. strong citrus flavor. Not the belgian i expected, but good nonetheless. BenRod (44), Springfield, Missouri, USA Oct 3, 2007 Dark brown body with offwhite head. good fruity aroma with a lot of dark malt. Taste was very malty with a nice finish. authenticbeer (1), Austin, Texas, USA does not count Oct 3, 2007 Pours out smooth with minuscule carbonation. The nose on this beer is full of dark fruit with spicy/sour hints. The taste was malty sweet, with the sour aspects saved for the finish.
Recommendation: In bottle, store for about 2-3 months to make sure the yeast takes up some of the residual sweetness if the beer is still young.
