COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Duchesee de Bourgogne is the traditional top fermented reddish-brown ale from the West-Flanders region of Belgium. This refined ale also known as "The Burgundies of Belgium" is a blend of 8 and 18 months old ales following careful maturation in oak casks. 100% natural and unpasteurized.

Bottle: Strong vinegar aroma as well as a little fruit and some sourness. Pours a reddish-brown with some transparency. Somewhat large bubbled head that is gone in 30 seconds. Very sweet flavor. Cherries and sour apples. Light caramel. Reminds me a little of the gueze I recently rated, but not quite as sour. Moderate sour finish. Not a big fan of the vinegar aroma so the final rating is going to take a slight hit. Very similar to a gueze.

Guest Draft at the Old Toad. Alittle hesitant to try this sour ale but the risk payed off. The aroma was of sour apples and cherries. I was prepared for a very sour taste but when i took my first sip I was pleasantly surprised. The sour beginning was overtaken by the sweet finish. The flavors were all over the board but all good. The high carbonation of this sour ale brings out the flavors in every sip of this exquist style of ales.

Like sour candy and gumballs, this beer starts out with a twang and is all sugar at the finish. The color is a very nice deep red, the aroma funky, the bottle, the beer, come off like the old world works of art they are.

Pours brownish-red with beige head. Aroma hit me full force of model glue, but I kind of like it. Well carbonated, with hints of cherry and quite sour in the flavor. Medium bodied. Pretty good.

UPDATED: JUN 18, 2010 As I tried this again and again, it has a bunch of metallic qualities and watery vinegar. Not as good as once rated. Poured from a bottle. The bubbles rise very slowly. Red-brown body. Light tan head. So-so lacing. The aroma is whiskey, vanilla, black pepper, sour fruits, oaK. It has a VERY complex aroma. Not as barnyardy as other flemish ales. The flavor is mellow given the aroma, alcohol, sour fuits, tangy, cask aged grape juice. Pretty damn tasty. The palate is very thick. Almost syrupy. Yet still very appealing.

This appeared a deep brown caramel color with a fairly tall light tan head. Scatterings of lace were left as this was consumed and the head retention was minimal. Holy Crap when I first poured this I took a big whiff and was hit with a HUGE funky tart aroma that was a bit overpowering. After letting it air for a bit it became much more pleasant with a bit of fruity tartness, a slight vinegar smell and some woody notes. Flavor wise this was super tart on the first sip that made me think it was going to take a while to get through this glass. After it warmed a bit I found it much more tasty and palatable with a nice mix of tartness and sweetness balancing each other out with the tartness taking a slight lead. There were fruit flavors and woody notes in the taste as well and a fairly nice lingering sour after taste. Mouthfeel was about medium with a soda bubbly feel to it that kind of detracted from it a bit but not much. This was a real sipper for me and I would definitely have to be in the mood for one of these to drink it. I would have it again in the future but I doubt more than one bottle at a time. Very interesting stuff that deserves a shot if you come across it, and I suggest letting it air out and warm a bit for the best experience.

Poured a deep ruby red, almost like red wine vinegar. Aroma was of sour cherries or raspberries, with a hint of vinegar. Flavor was slightly metallic, and dark, fermented fruits came through. Sweetness and tartness were both prominent in the taste, and they were rather well-balanced.

This tasted like black cherries, malt, brown sugar, sothern comfort, and strawberries mixed together. i thought it was excellent. good body and nice clean finish.

(Bottle at Le Poechenellekelder, Brussels) Amber with an offwhite head. Floral aroma, fruity and quite strong. Fruity malty flavor with vanilla and notes from red wine. Grape and juniperberry. Sweet finish with some cinnamon. Different and a bit hard to define, but quite ok.

awaisanen (1304) - Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, USA - MAR 11, 2006
Dark, ruby red coloring with a thick, quickly diminishing head. Intensly sweet, cloying aromas of balsamic vinegar and black cherries. Texture is insanely carbonated and saturated with berry sugars. Raspberry, strawberry, and rouge champagne litter the tongue. Aftertaste reminds me a bit of nutrasweet. One of the sweetest Flemish sour ales I have ever tasted, but almost to the point where it clashes with the sour characteristics of the style.
