Pours with a frothy head that disappears rather quickly, and elicits a fruity aroma. There is a full cherry flavor with noticeable carbonation. I found the combination of strong kriek and sour brown flavors to be unique and quite satisfying. Overall, an outstanding beer.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
33 cL bottle, snifter, bottle labled as "Echt Kriekenbier". My first impression of the aroma is "gingerbread cookies". Tons of cherries, cask wood, raisin, slight port, a bit of anise and maybe some soy sauce in the aroma. Smells every bit as good as its little brother but yet entirely different. Light plum-red body with a tall, pink, frothy head that diminishes quickly. Heavily sweet, moderately acidic (sour) flavor becomes a moderately sweet, moderately acidic (sour, tart) finish. Strong tannin presence in the aftertaste. Medium body, oily/slick texture, average carbonation. The bottom line is: a very drying, tannin laced finish is a little strong for my preference, but this is still a very fine brew.

This bottled brew marked best before 6/7/05 poured a large sized head of foamy finely sized quickly diminishing to the point of non-existence with a very loud noisy decrease as the head receded from the popping bubbles. The bubbles were purple hued and left behind a poor lacing. The body was carbonated and transparent purple/brown in color. The aroma was strongly cherry and malty. The mouth feel was initially tingly bubbly and had a dry finish with continued to dry in a lingering finish. The flavor contained strong notes of cherries.

Bottle. Best before 6-7-05. Poured a large pinkish fizzy head with fine-small sized bubbles that quickly dissipated. Soft carbonation, transparent and a red hue. Cherry, sweet and alcohol aroma. Sweet, acidic, cherry and alcohol flavor from start to finish. Tingly mouthfeel.

UPDATED: JUL 18, 2010 Cask conditioned - pumped by some method similar to a syringe? - GBBF 2004. A sour fruity smell to this deep red coloured beer with a good looking off-white head. The taste is suitably sour with good cherry notes. A long lingering aftertaste to this classy beer. Score 4.3
Subsequent rating scored 4.2. Score unchanged.

Draught at the Great British Beer Festival, Kensington Olympia, London. (Thursday Session). Very, very nice kriek, woody, and well balanced with enough sweetness to counteract the sourness. Very good beer.

Draught at Erasmus, Bruges (not a regular). Clear red with small head. Sweet, biscuit, cardboard, cellar-like qualities (cork?), light-bodied. Nice.

Oak-aged butter drops nesting in sparkling cherry crops...Tartness as an elegantly subdued geyser, rises tastefully and then falls before the end...A refreshing gateway to Flemish Sours, in the same ballpark as their Duchesse de Bourgogne...

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: OCT 27, 2004 Very dark brown body with a little red. Has a small light purple head. The aroma is mild with oak, vanilla and cherries. I expected the taste to be much more sour. However, I got oak, toast, cashews and a hint of cherry. Finishes with a copper and stale bread. Certainly interesting, but nothing extraordinary.
