COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Nose is a bit too acidic but has nice red berry notes, flavor is a touch on the sweet side and lots of red berry with a slight tart cherry quality. Lively carbonation. Good solid beee.

Bottle/11.2oz - Pours a clear reddish brown in color with ruby highlights, if held to the light. Head is an off-white, foamy and fades quickly. Aroma is of tart cherries, grapes/apples and a hint of darker fruit. Not overly sour, due to the aging, but nicely tart with plenty of fruitiness. Slightly metallic in the finish, which may be due to some oxidation while in the bottle. Finish also has some lingering sweetness. Excellent aged sour beer...

pour is opaque ruby brownish, with a thin off white foamy head. aroma is black cherry, woody oak. Flavour is not overly sour, bit more tart, with a smooth sweetness as well from the wood. More of that black cherry tart/sweetness. hints of vanilla. pretty tame compared to other flemish sours, but still pretty damn tasty.

At a tasting, thanks DSG, small stable head, clear dark red colour, aroma of cherries with oxidised notes and a touch of rubber, fruity flavour that is a bit artificial and some metalic notes, medium sourness with a light sweetness, light but long sour aftertaste. Quite nice but a bit flat.

Sweet, funky, and fruity aroma with notes of grapes, cherries, and plums. Cherry-brown color. Tastes sour, sweet, and tart. Light carbonation with a foamy sweet finish. Complex, enjoyable, sour beer. Only negative for me is that the tart finish sticks on your tongue a bit too long- but this is easily resolved by taking another sip.

Bottle at the grand opening of World of Beer in the Brewery District. Clear red pour with a thin beige head. Aroma is both sweet and sour, with cherry as the dominant note and some butterscotch in the background. Malty cherry flavor with some toffee character before a vinaigrette finish.

25 cL bottle from ABS Drinks poured into a Karmeliet glass at home. Nicely formed and quite small light brown head on dark brown beer. Smells typically sour, vinegary and of ripe fruit. Actually very nice, a little sour but not too heavy, lightly acidic and full. Tastes oak aged. A nicely balanced lightly sour ale.
