“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

0.25 l bottle from belgiuminabox, best before December 2016. Clear, very dark red with a thin, frothy, quickly diminishing, tan head. Sweetish-sourish, fruity-malty aroma of sour cherries, red wine, vinegar and oak. Sweetish-sourish, fruity malty taste of brown sugar, sour cherries, red wine, vinegar and oak, followed by a short, sweetish-tart finish. Medium body, slightly effervescent and astringent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Quite sweet without being artificial but also not that complex, rather simple Oud Bruin. Pleasant to drink nonetheless.

Brown body, headless. Very sour, acidic style. Wine notes, some red fruit, but way over the top for my taste. Okay palate not too thin. But I don’t enjoy it much. Happy to go to a more balanced beer next. Maybe some fruit would help. Or aging. (Bottle from ABS Drinks)

Again a good sour red/brown from this brewer. Tasty and refreshing. Would have to try it along the Duchesse. I think this one is a little drier.
