Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Bottled. Clear ruby color, short head. Aroma of slight oak, tart fruit, some malt. Sourish taste, bit sticky. Very typical flemish sour ale, bit dry and oaky. Though quite soft compared to american sours, as always.

Bottle sampled on 09/26/08 at Night of the Funk. Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of raisins and fig. Flavor of raisin bread with a sour finish. Wow, this beer is quite tasty! I love its breadiness. I wish I could get some more of it.

Bottle from 08 Night of the Funk. Aroma of cheesy funk, lots of fig, some raisin. Flavor also has a bunch of raisin and is equal parts tart and sour. Nice.

Brown with a low head and bubbling carbonation. Aroma of basement, wet soil and oak. Starts out sweet and sugarish and then goes into sourness developing an acidic cherry and oak like character. The carbonation is lively which suits the beer well in this case. All in all an impressive, sweet and refreshing Oud Bruin. Bravo!

12 oz bottle picked up from Binny’s (Orland Park, IL). Pours a deep dark browish red reminiscent of some ancient wood armoire. Small whitish head that dissipates pretty quickly. Aromas are more substantial than the taste, sour red winey characteristrics and that good old wood aged character. Taste is similar, a little more subdued with more sweetness mixed with sour, providing a good balance, but taking away from some of the sour aspects. Finishes nicely, a bit sour and oakey. Not as good as Rodenbach, but more sessionable. Cheers.
