COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Brownish-red, big beige head. Aroma sour, fruity, funky. Flavor sour, fruity (cherries, plums, pomegranate,) funky, some oak. This is one where I don’t miss hops; enough is going on without them. Not full-bodied in a way that would involve heaviness, but thanks to the sourness it fills the mouth in a really nice way. I’m reminded again of why I became a beer geek.

Bottle at home. One year old bottle. Pours a clear, deep mahogany color and a beige, creamy head. Aroma of leather, vinegar, sweet cherries, oak, yeast, wine grapes, dried fruit, crowberry and licorice. Quite complex. The flavor follows up but is more sweet with tones of brown sugar, sweet cherries, wood, cola and hints of balsamico. Has a slick and sticky mouth feel, and a light bitterness. A really complex and tasteful ale, well-balanced and a delicious version of the style.

33cl bottle at home. Dark amber brown with a medium slightly off-white head. Light to medium body with moderate carbonation. Sour and sweet tones. Ripe cherries, vinegar, brown sugar, raisin and herbs. An ok sour brew.

330 mL bottle poured into a goblet. Pours a dark brown with a hint of orange color. Large off-white head despite a careful pour. Substantial surface foam even an half hour after pouring. Sour cherry smell. A bit of a vinegar smell behind it and maybe some sweetness. A tart flavor with cherries. Not an overpowering sourness at all. A bit of lingering sweetness, but not cloying at all. Doesn’t feel as light as 5.1% at all. Only slightly thin in the finish. Medium carbonation helps keep it from feeling too heavy, though. Nice balance. Not too sour, not too sweet.

Pours a reddish brown color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor have tart black cherry, vinous red wine, vinegar, hints of chocolate and maple sweetness and some vanilla oak. A little too sweet for my liking.

Bottle, 250mL. Home. A clear brown beer with mahogany hues ; medium white head poorly persistent. Fruity aroma, wood, acid note, caramel. Medium sweet, lasting medium acid. Medium body, thin texture, average carbonation, acid-sweet finish. Overall, very good sour red beer ; better acid there than sour.

11.2 oz. bottle thanks to Emily. Appearance: finger tan head, dark amber red color, good lacing, light cloudy. Aroma: vinegar, caramel, light fruity strawberry. Palate: light body, average carbonation, thin texture, smooth. Taste: sweet strawberry and caramel into light tartness, comes down into light fruitiness and smooths out. Overall, very drinkable, very enjoyable, not that sour.

Pours a dark reddish brown color letting almost no light through with a huge head. Aroma is vanilla, malt, sweet strawberry, balsamic vinegar, black cherry, faint chocolate, tart overall. Taste is strawberry, balsamic, cherry, very dry oak, slight sour. Aroma is almost bigger than the taste, very complex, never saw a few of these notes in a sour before so I enjoyed it.

beer-yum (804) - Wellington, NEW ZEALAND - JUL 5, 2015
Pleasantly sour farmyard aroma in a mahogony pour. Flavour is sour to start but builds with complex layers of fruit, bread, and bubblegum. A fresher version of their benchmark Duchesse De Bourgogne.
