COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Pours a dark brown with almost no carbonation and a medium head that quickly vanishes to a thin ring around the glass. Aroma is sour apples, almost cider like. Taste is sweet and cloying, again like a cider. Finish is sweet apple and sour fruit. As a neophyte to sours I think this is one of the more benign ones I’ve sampled...however I find that I like it quite a lot. Dilemma.

Bottle in Belgium. Reddish brown with a small head. Aroma of balsamic vinegar, sweet toffee malt and plums. Flavor is fairly sweet with some vinegar sourness and light oak. Medium body. Excellent beer but couldn’t drink a lot of this one, sweet and sour.

Bottle at the brass tap, poured an amberish red color with aromas of light cherry, wet wood, and a touch of vinegar. Flavors are tart cherries, and wet wood, light sourness overall, could drink this all day.

Pours a thick hazy brown from the bottle with thin bubbly tan head and moderate lacing. Aroma is shite cherries and oak. Taste follows, kind of sweet. I’ve had better sours honestly.

Bottle share thanks to Rick, this one was all vinegar for me. Had off scents and taste, was tough to drink it, had almost a zesty flavor character.

February 2011. Poured redbrown with a white head. Good to see a beer that has been around for so long is still going strong. Aromas are dark sour fruit, yeast and malt. Taste is tart and refreshing. Good beer.

Bottle @ home picked up at Wilbur’s Fort Collins. Pours a clear reddish brown appearance with a brown head. Vinous, black cherry, chocolate cake, oaky aroma. Juicy, black raspberry, cherry, red grape, fairly vinous, oaky, mildly acetic flavor. Smooth and easy to drink but not all that interesting.

The aroma is so promising with notes of fruit, sweetness, and balsamic vinegar; however, the taste is not at all like the aroma. Overly sweet, syrupy and not that sour. Disappointing.

sticky cough-drop cherry sweetness, slightly acetic, overly dense, stinky-sweet closeness to the aroma. sweet cherry-funk and cough drops. carbonation is big, and is the only part of this beer that makes it even remotely drinkable.

Bottle at home. It pours deep red-brown with a small beige head. The nose is jam, cherry, wood, earth and light spice. The taste is tangy cherry, cherryade, lemon, light wood, faint vinegar and jam. Medium body, moderate carbonation and slightly sticky mouth-feel. Pretty decent all-round tangy fruity sour beer.

Bottle at home. Clear brown pour. Aroma of balsamic vinegar, oak, fruity, some red wine and a hint of licorice. Flavor is sour sweet and fruity. A bit thin but well carbonated.
