COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

An excellent sour. Aroma is hints at the tartness. Smells of cherries and oak. Taste is sweet fruit initially and then the acetic tartness moves in. Highly carbonated and light bodied this is a very good sour beer. I don’t get as much oak in the taste as other reviewers though.

Bottle at T’ Brugs Beertje, 17/10/14. Hazed mahogany brown with a decent off white covering. Nose is bitter fruit peel, spice, dark malt, toffee, tarte orchard, light acidics. Taste comprises tarte fruit peel, candied orange on the turn, light fruit balsams, musty wood, tarte apple core. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a light acidic wash. Decent Flemish red, fairly easy drinker.

UPDATED: OCT 19, 2014 Dark blood red color with big head. Very red-viney aroma, a bit of dark fruits. Very sweet, slightly tart, fruity taste. Reminds me very much of cherry balsamico. I would like it to be much more sour, but this kinda fits. Interesting, and my friends like it more than the more sour versions.

Bottle @ ’t Poatersgat. Pours slightly hazy dark ruby with small beige head. Vinous aroma with notes of yeast and hops. Vinous onset leading to sweetish notes of fruit and malt, ending quite dry and acidic, with notes of yeast. A good one.

Reminiscent of the Douchesse, but with a more oaky taste and with some extra sour fruit. Tasty beer.

The only better beer I have had in this category is Dutchess du Burgoyne. Nice and tart.
