Commercial Description:
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

33cL bottle, no bbe date, hell, not US warning even, bootlegged?.

Pours deep red, almost brown, big fluffy tan head fades to a thin ring with time leaving some sexy lace upon my Chouffe tulip.

Mildly tart nose with some strange butterness in there also, not over the top butter, but enough to notice.

Very balanced Flemish Red/Brown, never really takes it to far in any direction, mild sourness with some more butter.

330 ml, bb 31-07-08. Translucent, deep mahogany with garnet highlights. One-finger, creamy tan head lasts longer than the beer in my glass. Aroma is a pleasant mix of tart berry, overripe dark fruit, some hints of wood, metal and malt vinegar. Flavor is tart raspberry-cherry, dates, brown sugar, earthy spices, gunmetal, oak, vinegar. Medium body is smooth, a little sticky, but acidic-tingly and refreshing. Very well-balanced and sessionable sour with nice dubbel-like flavors.

Bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lasting tan head leaving behind good lacing. Aromas of basalmic vinegar, sour cherry, toffee and light spice. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a slightlky tart finish. Flavors of basalmic vinegar, cherry, light toffee and light spice with a smooth lingering lightly tart finish.

Bottled. Clear ruby color, short head. Aroma of slight oak, tart fruit, some malt. Sourish taste, bit sticky. Very typical flemish sour ale, bit dry and oaky. Though quite soft compared to american sours, as always.

Bottle. Pours a lovely deep ruby with rocky beige head. The aroma is woody sourness with a bit of a vinous fruit element, and a very distant chocolate note. The flavor is sweet fruits (berries, plum, orange, fig), a pretty strong oak component, and a tart acidity. Smooth caramel is throughout. The finish has a strange roasted note to it that lingers into a dusty aftertaste. Refreshing.
