COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Aroma of balsamic vinegar, with some over-ripe cherry notes. Appears a deep red mahogany-tinged color, with a big creamy tan head that lasts. Flavor is tart but not too sour, with some sweet over-ripe fruit in the middle, and ending with woody notes. Palate is moderate, slick, and effercescent. Overall, an excellent example. My thanks to SoLan for this tasty brew.

The only better beer I have had in this category is Dutchess du Burgoyne. Nice and tart.

Poured from bottle, pours a clear dark reddish brown with a thin off white head, aroma has a good kick of sour dark fruit with a little but of vanilla, the flavor has a lighter front than I was expecting and wasn’t nearly as sour, more sweet and malty, not yet terrible but nothing great

Bottle at home from backlog notes. Pours a reddish brown color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor have tart black cherry, vinous red wine, vinegar, hints of chocolate and maple sweetness, oak, prettyeasy to drink tthough it does have a decent tart/sour pop.

Bottle. Light hazy deep brown liquid with medium light tan head. Aroma of raw sugar, wood, lacto and toffee. Taste is medium sweet and light sour with notes of toffee and raw sugar. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Meh.

330cl bottle at home (Brazil) thanks to my wife. Having previously tried the Kriek version which I did not like due to a detection of artificial sweetner I was not expecting too much. Wow was I wrong. This is a hidden gem. Its a real old school flemish sour. Every bit as good as Rodenbach. I need to do a side by side tasting.

Dark body with a large tan head that leaves foam sticking around for quite a while. Tart fruits in the aroma that also carry through into the flavor. Tastes better than it smells with a slight sourness. Thick mouthfeel, plus what feels like tannin? Perhaps from the oak barrels or whatever. $10 for a 11.2 oz bottle at the Publick House.

CONCLUSION : que de plaisirs dans cette bière !

25 cl bottle. Pretty clear but very dark red pour with off white head. As usual, a powerful whiff of acetic acid burns your nostrils as you approach the glass, but as you get used to it, a nice bouquet of red fruits develops, lots of cherry, light raspberry notes, oak of course, intense cinnamon, light toasted notes. Taste is only mildly acidic, nice fruity flavor, spicy finish. Palate is quite dry, light bodied with good carbonation. Very easy drinking and quite enjoyable.

BOTTLE 25CL. Look: Gusher! Deep and clear ruby-brown with a giant gushing beige frothy head. Aroma: vinegar, greet fruit, acetone/glue and some sweetness in the background. Taste: moderate acidity, harsh glue/acetone notes, apple vinegar and a solid sweetness too.
