Piquant Porter
A splendid full bodied flavoursome porter with excellent notes of coffee and chocolate. Full bodied on the palate with a good balance of roasted bitterness. Hampshire beer of the year 2012

Dark chocolate, pralines, intense, toasted malts, dark fruits. Black, small, frothy, beige head. Light bitter. More toasted malts, chocolate, soft carbonation, medium bodied, lots of chocolate in the otherwise bitter finish. Nice Porter, intense and well-balanced. Cask at The Evening Star, Brighton.

Butchers Hook, Southampton. From a brewery which likes to aggressively hop, I was pleased that this beer was allowed to show its malt character without having to battle with American hops - especially as there seemed to be some warning of hop bite in the subname description of "Piquant Porter". Easy drinking, smooth and flavoursome. Some of the dry roast coming through as a bitter contrast to the sweet fruit of the malt. I like dark ales, and I quite enjoyed this, though it didn’t have some of the depth I usually enjoy, and there was a distinct lack of character suggestive of single use commercial yeast, and a sealed low heat fermentation.

Cask at the Fox & Hounds, Reading. Dark brown with a thin beige head and a frothy mouthfeel. Coffee and cocoa throughout with a touch of roasty malts and a light earthiness. Liked it.

piquant porter, 4.9%, 500ml, from Bitter Virtue/ pours quite dark brown to black with a red hue and an enormous head due to a lot of co2. Aroma of chocolate, toasted and roasted malts, black currant, coffee. Taste has a weak sour note, coffee, toasted and roasted malts, weak/medium bitterness, chocolate, the acidic of the blackcurrant is a bit too much, it could have used a spicy peppery note, medium body, slightly dry. --dnf..

Cask at the Prince of Wales, Farnborough. 29/07/16. Rounded sweet mocha aroma. Not quite pitch black. Frothy beige head. Medium bodied - iniial hint of sweetness before the bitterness kicks in. Goes from a creamy nuttyness to that bitter burnt coffee on the tongue. Need to look up the word piquent, as this is apparently a ’piquent porter’.

Cask, Chelmsford Ale House, 20/6/2016. Opaque. Beige lacing. Black malt colour. Loads of velvet on flavour. Super silky. Incredibly soft malts. Good levels of roasting. Not ott. Really well roasted malts. Devonshire clotted cream. Great Belgian chocolate. Really clean and well-made porter. I loved this one!

Deep dark, inpenetratable brown color with creamy frothy brown foam. Aromas of dark malt, chocoloate, milky and creamy, smooth. Palate, medium body with full mouthfeel and smooth texture leaving bitter chocholate/coca finish. Taste is quite bitter and harsh of chocolate, dark coffee and heavy going. Overall, very nice dark ale with a punch, would recomend to try.
