Hampshire beer of the year 2012 A splendid full bodied flavoursome porter with excellent notes of coffee and chocolate. Full bodied on the palate with a good balance of roasted bitterness.

Cask at the Prince of Wales, Farnborough. 29/07/16. Rounded sweet mocha aroma. Not quite pitch black. Frothy beige head. Medium bodied - iniial hint of sweetness before the bitterness kicks in. Goes from a creamy nuttyness to that bitter burnt coffee on the tongue. Need to look up the word piquent, as this is apparently a ’piquent porter’.

Cask, Chelmsford Ale House, 20/6/2016. Opaque. Beige lacing. Black malt colour. Loads of velvet on flavour. Super silky. Incredibly soft malts. Good levels of roasting. Not ott. Really well roasted malts. Devonshire clotted cream. Great Belgian chocolate. Really clean and well-made porter. I loved this one!

Deep dark, inpenetratable brown color with creamy frothy brown foam. Aromas of dark malt, chocoloate, milky and creamy, smooth. Palate, medium body with full mouthfeel and smooth texture leaving bitter chocholate/coca finish. Taste is quite bitter and harsh of chocolate, dark coffee and heavy going. Overall, very nice dark ale with a punch, would recomend to try.

Bottle at home. Pours very dark with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and some herbal bitter hop. Taste is very bitter, with flavours of roasted grain, some dry berry fruit and lots of bitterness. Despite the dryness, easy drinking, rich and tasty. Long dry finish. A very good example of a porter, but at the dry and bitter end of the spectrum.

2015-09-21. Crisp black body with a nice frothy tan head. Aroma of toasty roasty malt. Flavour is interesting, dry roast malt, lightly tangy fruity undercurrent. Whispers of cocoa in the finish. Smooth average bodied palate, soft carbonation. 3+ Cask at Bag O Nails, Bristol.

Bottle. Black with a small head. Slightly bitter with a trace of sulphur. Reasonable but could have been better bottled. Certainly not one of their best.

Bottle. Deep brown pour, very dark in the glass. Fair level of carbonation leaving a tan head. Aroma smoky. Taste is almost meaty (hint of bovril!). Nice bitterness. Roasted coffee flavours. Nice pint.

Cask, gravity at The National Winter Ales Festival, Derby, Friday 13th February 2015 in company of Chris, Ruth, Jan, Charlotte, Neil, dad and Pauline. Pours dark brown in colour, hoppy and malty with a rather pleasant gravy like nose going on. Good to very good bitterness, a little roastiness. It is a very good beer. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov15 3.7
