Draft at Craft. Pours turbid ruddy brownish red clay color with minimal head. Nose is fruit, funky yeasty malt, hops. Tastes complex, fruity, tart, earthy, with mid-palate funky yeasty esters. Comes off like an 80%/20% Quad/Flanders red blend, and is very tasty.

Yeast in the neck of the bottle, a bigger sized, vast, sticky and slow disappearing vanilla to light tan ish colored head.
Smell is very light: some (carbo) gass, toasted grains, liquorice wood and bay leaf.
Taste is pretty full contrary to the smell: bay leaf, spicy, bitters, toasted barley malts and toasted grains, floral grains, light dry.
Aftertaste is bitter and spicy with a dryness, some toast, some grains, malts and floral.
Low (to medium) carbo, creamy blown mouthfeel, good medium body (close to full) and a thick creamy (light oily ish) texture.
Nice beer with a strong bitterness that does seem to dominate both taste and aftertaste. And there is no real depth, but furtherwise it’s ok.

Tap at Columbia Ale House. Pours lightly hazy brown with a very small, frothy white head, short to no retention with light and spotty lacing. Aroma is caramel, cookie and nutty malt with dates, figs, and pear esters with light earthy hops. Flavor is malt dominant with light warming alcohol, dark candied fruits, light hops and bitterness with a sweet finish. Full body and medium carbonation.

Sample at Buckeye Beer Engine. Pours a dark brownish-amber color with a medium dense light tan head that diminishes slowly. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malt and sweet spices. Full-bodied with flavors of sweet malt, toffee, cinnamon and yeast. The finish is sweet and fruity with a lingering malt aftertaste. Above average overall.

Very dark mahogony brown approaching black with a mahoosive frothy tan head.
Nose is spice, clove, liqourice, Xmas cake, light mint, dark fruit.
Taste follows, dark malts, touch of mint, spice, liqourice very evident, touch of alcohol but well disguised,
Fullish body with soft fine carbonation, smooth on the palate.

Draft at Monks. Opaque brown with a thin lacey head. Heavy chocolate caramel notes. Strong alcoholic Tootsie Roll. Root flavors. Cinnamon. Nutmeg. Mulled malt. Saddle leather. Drunk cherries. Burnt driftwood. Sweet stout, but a very dry finish. Caramel coated charcoal. Madness.

Very dark brown to black beer, creamy solid beige to brown head, stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: aniseed, overripe fruits, banana, liquorish, sweet, caramel. MF: soft carbon, full body. Taste: quite some liquorish, bitter and spicy, cocoa powder and dark chocolate, some overripe banana. Aftertaste: bitter hops, liquorish, dark chocolate, coffee, aniseed, overripe fruits. A bit too much anise, probably due to age, calls for a re-rating when it’s more aged. (Funny enough, I see I wrote the same for the 2011 version of which I still have a bottle waiting from last year.)

Cloudy very dark brown beer, big frothy beige head, bit stable, some chunks floating around. Aroma: lots of aniseed, bit of alcohol, liquorice, mocha, vanilla touch, dark caramel, bit of disinfectant, dried fruits. MF: ok carbon, full body. Taste: dark chocolate first, mocha, liquorice, anise, cloves, dried oranges. Aftertaste: pretty bitter, more liquorice, long lasting spicy bitterness. For my personal taste a bit too much of the liquorice stuff. Maybe it will be more balanced after a year. For now I’d suggest some strong tasting, preferably marinated, game meat to go with it, or maybe a rich chocolate cake. And why not marinate the meat in the beer?

Dark brown beer, little cloudy, big beige chunks floating around. Huge towering creamy beige head, stable and adhesive. Aroma: caramel, brown sugar, mocha, dates, figs. MF: little 2 much carbon (lost 1 point), medium to full body. Taste: coffee, chocolate, caramel, dried fruits. Aftertaste: coffee bitter and hops, bit sour, berries. Really nice Christmas beer.

Botella. Murky dark brown colour, beige head. Sweet dark fruity spiced aroma. Good mouthfeel. Flavour is sweet and spiced with dark fruits and dark malt, sweet.
