2011 Edition. Dark chestnut color, full brown yellowish head. Nose : full of chocolate, hint of coffee, dried fruit, nuts, bit earthy. Taste: lots of spices: alcoholic (bit too much in the finish). Body is soft, creamy taste, slightly CO2. Finish is bitter sweet.

2013 Vintage. Pours a mahogany burnt umber color with two fingers of fluffy sticky eggshell foam. The nose is soft burnt sugar, plum and well integrated spice. The palate follows with solid backbone of caramelized sugars melding seamlessly with rustic grain and balanced spice, nutmeg, anise add nice complexity as the beer dries out towards the finish. Tasty winter selection !

2013 . should this also be an entry - aliased , like the 11 and 12 ? i supose it should be ... at bierhuyske pours very dark brown, small , darker white head smell is reminding at their generaal high carbo . bitter, chocolaty , bit malty. some metallicness. like an intenser version of ’generaal’ wich i like in the first place . yeah, best christmasbeer i drank since a long time ..

Metalchopz (2216) - Cantley, Quebec, CANADA - NOV 5, 2013
2012 edition. Pours a copper colour with ruby highlights, lots of particles floating all over, a frothy beige head and great retention for a brew with such a high alcohol content. 3mm coats the brew and seems to stay there. Big molasses aromas with dark fruits (plum, dates). The alcohol is very well-hidden with a wet mouthfeel and no burning, nor warming at all. Starts on a rusty hop taste, but this seems to balance itself. Roasted and caramel malts, spices, hints of anise and beautiful hops. A very nice winter warmer as it breathes.

Pours a deep brown with a medium beige head that leaves impressive lacing. Aroma is fruity and sweet with some molasse and spices. Taste follows suit with a medium level of sweetness but it is balanced out by some appreciated bitterness and some light alcohol notes. Flavors of chocolate, caramel and raisins. Tastes a bit like a quad but without the body. Speaking of which, body feels medium. Texture is smooth but carbonation is a touch too high for my liking. A good belgian!

(Rating #5195)
