"I mean, say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it’s an ethos." (Walter Sobchak, The Big Lebowski)
This is the essence of the defence people make of this beer: It’s foul, but hey! at least it’s not bland.
My 1000th Australian rating on RateBeer. Don’t think I’ve had this one since the early ’90s. Even so, memory is probably chipping a couple of points off this rating.
Longneck bottle, 3C. A$6 - not even cheap by Australian standards. Gold with a decent white head that fades but doesn’t disappear. Aroma is grainy with some light weedy hop notes. Sweet but this cold not overwhelmingly so, with a reasonably bitter finish that’s weedy and slightly metallic. Letting it warm at all is a bad idea as the malt (and presumably sugar) side of things flabs out and dulls the bitterness. But there’s no corn or cooked vegies - it’s all quite competent. And then a second cold glass I just couldn’t face.
So yes: It’s not pleasant, but at least it’s not bland. Very cold it has a biting character at the end that you’d hesitate to inflict on a slug but is a distinction of a kind. You couldn’t launch a beer with that egregious finish, but as a brand it prospers or at least endures on it, I think, as a blokey rite when passing from the degradations of work to the stupor of mateship. And from there into the void.
Better than recalled.

As mentioned in the style - not a true bitter, but a lager. The beer snob in me wants to say "it is just another macro", but to be honest (which is what we want from fellow raters), I like this beer. It smells like a macro beer, so nothing special there, and appearance wise a very thin foam that goes away very quickly, and it is a typical pale lager colour. My advice - drink from the stubbie (glass bottle) or can as the colour, head and aroma are not anything special or enhanced by a good pour.
The palate is clean, crisp and perfect for a hot day. As the advertising goes: "for a hard earned thirst"; and that is exactly when this is best - when you are hot and thirsty and want a refreshing drink that isn’t sweet.
For a macro beer it has a good full taste as a lager should, slightly bitter compared to other Australian macro’s and has a reasonable mouth feel - for a lager.
Enjoy cold from the esky (chiller) and know that it is NOT for those who want to savour a beer slowly, it is for bbqs, watching rugby league, Australian football, or a five day cricket test match in the hot sun on the hill.
P.S. and it makes a pretty good shandy (half beer / half lemonade) for the partner without wasting high quality and expensive beer.

It has a very low foaming as quickly disappear. The aroma is dominated by malt that fades in light hint of hops. The taste is also first most marked by malt, but mixes quickly with hops which remains in very good balance with the malty taste. I seem to feel more Czech than English touch in this lager. The finish is long, hoppy and pleasantly lager.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20

It pours a light gold with a 2 finger head of foam and leaves some lacing. A pretty good looking brew.
The smell is of corn, grain, and a nondescript bitterness.
The taste isn’t bad up front; there’s a decent balance between the corn and grainy sweetness and a light bitterness. On the back end it does get a bit too corny and sweet but overall, it’s not that bad. Some compliment for a beer, eh?
Usual carbonation and body for the style, it’s easy drinking. It might have been even better before the best by of Aug 2011. :^)
